race report w/e 12th September

The Great North Run is the biggest half-marathon in the world, with 57 000 runners taking part in this year’s 40th anniversary celebration. I presume the race is called ‘great’ because it refers to the wider geographic area of the north of England, rather than ‘great’ as in ‘super, smashing, great’, but either way it is an extraordinary event, and one for any serious runner’s bucket list.’ The weather in the North East was unseasonably hot, with the temperature rising close to 15 degrees, but that was no problem for TRC’s intrepid trio who had spent the summer acclimatising in the tropical South West.

Melanie Wilson was the first Thornbury runner to finish in a time of 1hr 44 mins. She was in 76th position overall in her age-group, which is a wonderful achievement in a race of such magnitude. Hugh McPherson and Chris Foley were barely ten minutes behind Mel, yet four and a half thousand runners crossed the line during that time – another indication of the scale of the event. Chris and Hugh compete in highly exclusive age categories, and once again achieved remarkable results: Chris an amazing 9th overall, and Hugh in 49th. They ran together and finished well inside the 2 hour mark.

There isn’t much to report from this week’s parkruns. Lots of club members are preparing for the Bristol Half, and of course the London Marathon. In a limited roster of results, the highlight has to be Laura Orna, who was first woman at Thornbury, in 22:10. Claire Watt was second woman, and her age-graded score was a fraction below 78%, which on that course is seriously fast. Ashleigh Ferris was in the top 5 at Haverford West, running 24:55, while Ian Hoffman ran 21:44 and was 8th overall in the Llyn Llech Owain parkrun: (translated from the Welsh it means ‘Lynne likes Owen’, presumably a reference to the burgeoning romance between the race directors).

15/05/21

TRC from Monday 19th April

In this week’s e-mail we have:
• Referring a friend
• It’s Working!
• Good News
• Report of week #2 of Club Coaching Tuesday
• Nutrition Questions
• New 10 min Group!
• Sunday morning runs are back
• Announcing ‘The Pete Mainstone Challenge’ 2021 – 22
• Parkrun of the week – Update
• Something to Report
• Who’s leading this week?

1. Referring a Friend – Emma & Chris Pritchard
One of our biggest sources of new members is family and friends, which is great! If you know somebody who would like to come along and try the club out please ask them to e-mail membership@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk before they attend. It really helps us if they get in contact first, so we can get the paperwork out of the way.
We have had 12 people come along for the first time in the past 2 weeks which is brilliant and we hope to keep it up.

2. It’ Working! – Kevin Wood
Thank you all for continuing to use the track & trace system. Looking at the number of people in the photos and the number registered it looks good! There were a couple missing from Aztec on Tuesday please. Remember this is for your safety.

3. Good News – Kevin Wood
Last week we reported that there were 70 people who had yet to responded. Delighted to report that we are now down to 36 yet to respond. Also, good news that we have 7 new joiners to the club since we started back 3 weeks ago.
One person who has moved away, so is not renewing, said “I do want to say thank you though to the club for making me feel so welcome in my year of running with you. I have been to a lot of the clubs in Bristol and I think this was definitely the friendliest I’ve been to!”

4. Report of week #2 of Club Coaching Tuesday – Kevin Wood
Another great turnout both at TLC and Aztec for Coaching Tuesday. The efforts session details are published in the WhatsApp groups and on Facebook for those who want to do it virtually. So if you are not on Facebook or in a WhatsApp groups, please join a WhatsApp group by contacting for Aztec / Nick (Williams) 07745 133524 or TLC / Kevin (Wood) 0796 6634237.
Please come and join one of the sessions next week, and remember you can move between groups.

5. Nutrition Questions – Kevin Wood
When we did the recent Coaching Survey there was interest expressed in a session on nutrition. So I have spoken to a number of nutrition professionals and also England Athletic to see who can help us.
We have been given an opportunity by EA to take part in pilot sessions with a nutritionist, along with only 1 or 2 other clubs. This would probably be a Zoom session.
EA have asked me to submit some sample questions in order to plan the session content and gauge the level of interest amongst our club members. Please send your questions to captain@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk so I can get back to EA. Thanks.

6. New 10 minute Group! – Kevin Wood
We’ve been looking at the Group’s for the past weeks and noticed that, based on Strava data, the 11 min and 5k group are running at a similar pace and over a similar distance. We are also getting a number people interested in joining the club looking for 10:00 – 11:00 pace group, a group we don’t currently have. So there is a gap at the moment in our current pace groupings.

So we have decided from 22nd April to make the following changes to groups:
1. Combining the ‘5k + 11’ into one group, running typically at 12 min currently
2. Introducing a 10 minute group (i.e. 10:00 – 10:30 pace).
All other groups remain unchanged.

7. Sunday morning runs are back – Steve Dimond
The Sunday morning Run is back. After a long gap Sunday morning runs are back next Sunday 25th April. As usual starting at the Scout Hut (car park) near Manorbrook School at 8:30. This coming weekend Ros will be leading a 15+ mile off road, and Steve Dimond, a 6 mile run at a steady pace. As usual, no-one will get left behind, there are usually ways of cutting back shorter, and covid group numbers etc will still apply. To be kept up to date on plans and routes there is ‘Sunday Long Run’ WhatsApp group – you can get added to this Group by contacting Mike Bennewitz 07790 491304

8. Announcing ‘The Pete Mainstone Challenge’ 2021/22 – Kevin Wood.
To recognise Pete Mainstone’s tremendous contribution to the club we voted to rename the Club’s ‘Captain’s Challenge’ the ‘Pete Mainstone Challenge’. Pete, Nick Langridge and I have revised the rules to make it competitive, inclusive and to encourage participation.
Simply select and enter events from the list below. We may need to change the events if any get cancelled! Please bear with us. Scoring uses a points system based on number of races run and finish position, the rules and an example of how it works is shown below. Nick has kindly volunteered to keep score.
There will be an overall female and male winner based on highest points. There will also be 5 category winners, combined female and male, based on the TRC pace groups.

The six events are:
• 27th May (Club Night) Club 10k Challenge (More info on this event to follow next week)
• 13th June Forest of Dean 10k
• 23rd June Chippenham 10k
• 29th August Severn Bridge 10k
• 5th September Woodchester
• 3rd October Berkeley 10k

Rules
• The challenge has 6 events. Each event is worth 5 points for simply entering and running (DNS = 0 points, DNF = 5 points). Enter as many as you like. You could score 30 points just by entering and running all 6 events.
• Your top 3 places count towards your final position points score. (This is in addition to the entry points for all the other events you enter from the 6 listed.)
• To calculate your position your finish time for an event is age adjusted. We are using positions and points, not times, as the events are of different distances and terrain.
• Your finish position versus the other TRC entrants is then determined, split by gender.
• First place, for each gender, gets 25 points, second 24 down to 1 point for 25th. If there are more than 25 female or male TRC runners they score 0 position points.
• There will be an overall female and male winner based on highest points.
• There will also be 5, combined female and male, category winners based on the 5 TRC Thursday Club Night pace groups.
• Any questions to captain@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk
• Final decision on any ruling Pete & Nick
• Events listed may change

For example:
• Betty enters all 6 events, but only runs 5 of them due to an injury. Her entry points for the 5 events run, based on 5 points each event = 25points
• In the 5 events, after her times are age adjusted, Betty has the following finish positions versus other female TRC participants: 10th, 15th, 20th, 12th and 8th.
• Betty’s best 3 finish positions are 10th, 12th and 8th. Points for these finish positions are 16 + 14 + 18 = 48 points
• Adding Betty’s entry points of 25 to her position points of 48 gives Betty an overall score of 73 points.

9. Parkrun of the week 5th June – Kevin Wood
All parkruns resume 5th June. It would be great if as many members as possible could turn up at Thornbury parkrun on 5th in club shirts and let everyone know we are back! We have spoken to Thornbury parkrun are expecting us. If you cannot run, please can you marshal at Thornbury on 5th June, wearing your club shirt of course.
Let’s make parkrun a club event each week and every week we will nominate a ‘parkrun of the week’ where we can muster and wear the club vest. Location list for future parkruns to be published nearer the time. Get your club shirt out again, or even buy a new one!

10. Something to report?
Matt Johnson, who has been reporting club runs and results very effectively to the local press for several years, has retired from running due to a long term back problem. We have written to thank Matt for his great work and service to the club. I am pleased to announce that Paul Harrod will be taking over the role and reporting will begin when parkrun restarts (5th June). If you have run results you would like to see reported please contact Paul via reports@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk

11. Who is leading this week?
7 min Nick Williams
8 min Kevin Wood & Alan
9 min Jerry Clothier
10 min (new group) Steve Dimond
11/12 min (5k) Caron Hale
Walking Val James

Coming up next week ….
• 27th May (Club Night) Club 10k Challenge

TRC Midweek Race Reports

After such a long time with no races at all to report we now have two reports for your delight.

Jo Emerson’s report on the Virtual Riverbank Rollick and Jim William’s report on the Virtual Bath Half

Virtual Riverbank Rollick

After many difficult hours of deliberation, TRC is pleased to announce the winners of the photo competition.
We have 5 prize winners, and these are (in no particular order)
• Jonathon Flower – some great action shots in rollick worthy conditions
• Melanie Monro – Coldest muddiest looking puddle
• Fiona Evans – Best water crossing (complete with dog)
• Pete Bartlett – Great race effort for some great pics
• Angela Ashton (with Katarina Mhairi Branmer) – Some happy faces, beautiful views and enough energy for a lovely double air shot.

These worthy recipients will receive their prizes along with medals within the next day or so. Also after a slight delay all medals are now winging their way to successful virtual rollickers.

We would also like to give a special mention to the following merit worthy photographers and facebook posters who narrowly missed out on the prizes
• Ingrid Broadbent and Sarah Vogan – Super scenic snowy shots
• John Grimsey – seriously rollick worthy mud
• Becky Anne – Great soundtrack and some very cheery leggings
• Chris Woolley – some lovely artistic photos ( and not short of mud either)
• Nicola Currel and Sue Dyer – Beautiful photos of Weston pier and beach
• LJ Pudding – Great effort in some icy looking mud
• Natalie Parsons – Hangover heaven

All of the photos are still open to view on our website where you can shave a giggle and see just how difficult it was to judge the winners.

Virtual Bath Half
Jim Williams reports on the results from the virtual half marathon training group.

Back in November 2020 I decided I’d quite like to up my running distance and on the road back from recovery, run a half marathon at an unspecified time in the future. I posted on our club Facebook and club emails to ask if anyone wanted to join me on a running journey. I wanted to set up a virtual-only group as a way of ensuring that we could continue to support each other no matter what future changes to lockdown occurred. That seems awfully prescient now.

13 people joined the group (with only one not being able to complete the training due to family commitments). After a brief survey we decided to all aim to run a half marathon the weekend of the 13th/14th March when a number of the group had already signed up to run the Bath Virtual half marathon.

A weekly training plan was produced and we had a regular Zoom call every Saturday at 5pm and a WhatsApp group to share our runs, give each other support and to talk about the various training sessions for that week. Whilst we haven’t been able to meet in person, having all of us able to be there for each other has been a really great part of our virtual journey.

So how did we all do on race day?
Not everyone had entered the Bath virtual half or chose to run on the right days. In order of the runs run over the last week, our results were as follows.

. Jim Williams 2:02 (once all the breaks were taking into account)
. Emma Barnes 1:44:34
. Jessie Harrison 2:10
. Cathy Watkins 2:59
. Rachel Murphy 2:59
. Karen Carr 2:21 (included stops for water and chats apparently)
. Sonya Bryson 2:21
. John Franksen 2:32
. Simon Groves 2.28
. Julia Jolley 1:52:45
. Carol Mosses 3:04:52

Kevin Arnold also ran the Virtual Fleet half marathon on the 13th December in 1:53:44, had another go on the 22nd December (1:46:31) and then accompanied Julia Jolley around a virtual Hants half marathon that he persuaded her to take a spare ticket for on the 30th December in 2:00:15 as well.

It was definitely different doing this half marathon training as a virtual group but in many ways we were much closer because of it. 12 runners all supporting and encouraging each other, sharing tips, successes, bad weather and horrid hill efforts. We celebrated PBs and new longest distances reached. Commiserated over injuries or poor runs or unruly dogs. And most importantly we did it. We set out to run a half marathon and we did. Just need to work out what our next challenge is.

Saturday Feb 20th 07.00-19.00 run for PHASE

Hello from all the team at PHASE,
Some of you may know Ben Burch who lives in Olveston. He is doing something special on Saturday and we would like to invite you all to join us (socially distanced of course) to come together as a community and support PHASE. We are joining with ALLEGR www.allegr.org set up by Ben Burch.

Ben is running for 12 hours non-stop, in 12 different locations (covid permitting) in each of the 12 months of this year. For his Febuary event he is going to be running a 6k loop near his home in Olveston on Sat Feb 20th from 7am until 7pm. He has kindly asked PHASE to be one of the local charities he supports alongside the main charity The Samaritans.

All you have to do is walk, run, cycle or scoot a 6k route between 7am and 7pm on Sat 20th Feb and together we will raise money for charities dealing with the many mental health and loneliness consequences of society having been forced to distance.

Ben wears a yellow wig while he runs and you are invited to do the same or anything yellow so others can spot you from a social distance on the day. Knowing we are coming together for the same important causes would be a fun way of being able to connect with each other. Phase is still working hard to support our vulnerable young people in this socially isolated time. Fundraising is vital to keep our services running and this is a great opportunity for us to raise awareness and most needed funds for PHASE.

Will you join us? Wearing something yellow? On Saturday 20th Feb?

Please post your 6k pics on our instagram page Phase4youngpeople. Go solo, go with your family or your support bubble. You can then donate to either cause or both! at www.allegr.org/blogs/campaigns/february.

Please use this challenge as your daily exercise. We would like everyone to stay safe and adhere to the lockdown rules.

Thank you.
Selina Slater selinaslater12@gmail.com

Time to Talk Day is Thursday 4th February 2021!

As Mental Health Champions of TRC, we want to encourage everyone to get out there and get running to support this!

Our aim is simply to raise awareness of mental health issues, and recognise the positive impact running can have to combat issues related to this which we may face in our everyday lives. This is especially important at the moment when things are so tough for us all during this lockdown.

It can be difficult to motivate yourself to get out and run sometimes as we all know, but some words of wisdom I once heard (from some equally crazy running enthusiast!) is that you never regret a run. It is so true.

So if you manage to arrange to get out for a run with a friend or running buddy on Thursday 4th, please help us in our mission by tagging your run on strava with #timetotalk.

Thanks all, and keep running 👍

TRC’s Virtual Riverbank Rollick – last chance to enter!

Its the last week of January and your last chance to give a boost to your fitness, your club and critically two charities doing wonderful work in our community. Entry into the TRC ‘Virtual Rollick’ is open until the final hours of this weekend. Your £8 gets you into the race and the potential to pick up medals and prizes. However, more importantly, especially in these times, most of the money will go directly to our 2 nominated charities, Made a Mark and calm, selected for their local presence and valued work. We really want to make a substantial contribution so dont let the dismal days put you off, make the most of this week by getting your entry in through Race Nation, clocking up your 9.6 miles and adding to the great photo posts on the rollick event of the facebook page

Happy running

Events Diary : December to March

A number of you had trouble finding the link to the new Events Diary attached to the TRC weekly e-mail sent out last Sunday. The link was actually there and it worked but it was squashed up against my e-mail address so it didn’t look quite right.

I have just updated the Diary and added 4 events including the Green Man Ultra (45 miles) so I am sending out again to everyone – attached here…. TRC Diary 2020-21

We will aim to keep this list updated on a regular basis and send out any updates with the weekly e-mail to all.

Most of these events are listed by one of the 3 organisations referenced at the foot of the Diary. The assumption is that if the event is listed on RunBritain or Time Outdoors or DBMax the event has been Licenced and will go ahead as per the dates given in a Covid secure environment.

If you wish to look further afield or into later next year then go to the organisation’s lists directly by copying & pasting the link given into your browser.

If you know of any events that should be added or of any changes to the events listed then please send an e-mail to trc@rensh.idps.co.uk

Thornbury Running Club – Notice of AGM 8pm Tuesday 20th October 2020 (Zoom)

We were scheduled to have the last AGM at the end of March 2020 but with lockdown in place we decided to postpone the AGM until the Covid situation was over or at least improved. Here we are 7 months further on and we still can’t hold an indoor meeting and the world has changed since last March!

Your Committee has put in a lot of time and effort to bring back safe running on Club nights and we have had to make a lot of very difficult decisions such as cancelling our three races – the Thornbury 10k, the Oldbury 10 Mile and the Riverbank Rollick. These races were our main source of funding for the Club for the year.

The AGM, which will be held on Zoom, is your opportunity to find out what the Club has been doing over the last year or so and to ask any questions or to raise any issues and to vote in a new Committee to take the Club forward into 2021.

The links through to Zoom and the Agenda will be sent out in due course but if you have anything you would like to raise please send an e-mail to our Secretary (Nigelhale@blueyonder.co.uk) by Tuesday 13th October and we will include it on the Agenda.

A number of long standing Committee Members are standing down at this AGM so we are looking for about 5 new people to join the Committee going forward. A number of Members had expressed their interest in joining the Committee last March so we will approach them first but we would welcome any other Members wishing to get involved. Send your details to Arthur Renshaw chairman@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk)
