6. TRC Run & Talk
Fed up with Lockdown and running on your own or stopped running? Fancy a run and a chat but lost your motivation? Why not contact TRCMentalHealthChampions@gmail.com to find a buddy to run with? Looking after one’s physical and mental health is even more important during the pandemic, luckily running does both.

There are many Club members who are missing being able to run with others during this time so why not drop us an email and we can put you in touch with another Club member local to you who would be keen to have someone to run with. Members who have been run buddies have found it both rewarding and mutually beneficial
Also, don’t forget to try the Zoom Cafe – another way of keeping in touch and staying motivated”

7. TRC CoVid Running Code

As you will be running on your own or with one other whilst we remain in Lockdown our CoVid Officer has developed a code to remind all TRC Members of best practise when out running.

Purpose:
As the CoVID pandemic continues unabated there is increased nervousness from other footpath users vying for the same space as ourselves. This code applies to running on your own as well as groups. It’s designed to hopefully help mitigate any possible negative reaction towards runners from other users of the limited footpaths we share around Thornbury.

Guidelines:
1. Always run – and be seen to be running – with physical distance between runners.
2. Try to avoid areas which we know will be busy with people walking. Where possible avoid single track passing places and if you find that you cannot pass with sufficient physical distance, stop and turn around, going back to a ‘safe passing place’
3. When running towards people approaching from the front
• Revert to single file running (and stop talking):
• Be the first to move, creating as much physical distance as you can (i.e. not just 2m)
• Move early & move in an exaggerated way
• Smile at people/wave as you pass (no need to talk) and thank them loudly afterwards if they have moved over too, or stopped
4. If you are approaching people from behind:
• Announce your presence and announce it in good time – don’t want until the last minute to give other footpath users the time to move if they wish.
• Again, move early and create sufficient physical distance
• Find a way which you are comfortable with to let them know you are coming (runners generally don’t carry bells!) so that we don’t startle them.
• Acknowledge them with a wave of the hand.
5. If you stop for a break, don’t clog up the pavement to allow other users to get past.

Conclusion:
Although these guidelines are pretty obviously good practice they are sometimes easy to forget. But hopefully if followed the running club will avoid any negative press aimed at runners.

That’s all for this week and we will keep you advised if anything changes.
If you have any events to add to the Diary or if you have anything to add or any suggestions or announcements please send by e-mail to trc@rensh.idps.co.uk

Anyone can join in. Basically, run a 5K wherever you want on Saturday or Sunday, record a time, an ascent in metres if you can, preferably with screen shot of your route but not essential and email the time and any evidence to Alan price at asw2818e@btinternet.com by 6 pm on the Sunday. Just to mix it up one minute will be deducted from your time for each 25 metres of ascent and the results are out each Monday morning.
Full instructions are at Join us for a virtual parkrun | Stonehouse parkrun There is also a special Facebook page where photos, comments etc can be posted if you are so inclined. Stonehouse Virtual parkrun #33 results… – Stonehouse parkrun | Facebook

3. Where possible avoid single track passing places and if you find that you cannot pass with sufficient physical distance, stop and turn around, going back to a ‘safe passing place’

TRC from Friday 1st January 2021

Happy New Year to all our Members, let’s hope for a better 2021!

As I’m sure you all know South Gloucestershire remains in Tier 3 and the next review will be in two weeks on Wednesday 13th January.

Sport and physical activity in Tier 2 or 3
In line with guidance from sporting national governing bodies, you can take part in organised sport and physical activity outdoors with any number of people. However, you should avoid contact in training and, for some sports, avoid contact in all activities. Read the guidance on what this means for your sport.
Gyms and sports facilities will be open for individual exercise and exercise in single households or support bubbles only. Indoor group activities and exercise classes should not take place.
You can continue to do unlimited exercise alone, or in an outdoor public place in groups up to 6.

***************************************************************************

A few weeks ago, your Committee unanimously agreed that whilst we could legally recommence the Group runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays we should hold off whilst we are in Tier3.

Note that there will be no arranged run on Thursday 7th January. If we are down in Tier 2 after 13th January the next organised runs will be on Tuesday 19th Jan and Thursday 21st Jan.

Captain Kevin Wood is not intending to post any routes on Facebook during this period. However depending on requests he may start again if Members find it helpful. Either message Kevin on Facebook or e-mail him direct if you want routes to restart.

Some good news from over the Christmas period…. Carol Mosses was first FV60 in the virtual Chippenham Shortest Day 10k in 74.53 – 6 mins in front of the 2nd FV60. In the process she knocked nearly three minutes off her 10k PB time, and also improved her recorded times for 5k, 1mile and 1k. Not only that but her virtual route went from town all the way up Grovesend Road, up the A38 to Milbury Heath, down Cuttsheath Road and New Road into Tytherington and then up Stowel Hill Road / Tytherington Road back into Thornbury, which is a pretty demanding and hilly route for a 10k. Amazing running and great support from Simon Groves, Julia Jolley and Kevin Arnold who also ran with her.
In the same event Jon Welsh was 2nd MV50 in 58.36

1. England Athletics Run & Talk Programme
At the last committee we approved a proposal by Emma Pritchard to apply for the club to join EA’s #RunandTalk programme. #RunandTalk aims to improve mental health through running. The idea is to remove the stigma around mental health, raise awareness and provide support to anyone who needs it. Full aims can be found here: https://www.englandathletics.org/athletics-and-running/our-programmes/runandtalk/

Emma has now recruited three other TRC’s #RunandTalk Champions:
Laura Orna
Carol Mosses
Hugh McPherson
Emma Pritchard
In January we will be working together to submit an application to join England Athletics #RunandTalk programme.
If you want to know more about this, either email: e.pritchard91@yahoo.com or via Fb Messenger

2. Virtual Riverbank Rollick – January 2021 (TRC Members are encouraged to enter)
Entries for the Virtual Rollick is live on Race Nation with full details via the Facebook Page.

https://race-nation.co.uk/register/thornbury-running-club/virtual-rollick-2021

This event is open to all TRC Members. To make sure that the spirit of the infamous ‘Rollick’ is not lost, we expect at least half of your run to be off-road and to involve an acceptable level of mud wind and water.

To this end we would encourage all participants to upload photographic evidence of rivers, dirty trainers, muddy faces or any other inspired pictures from their chosen routes on to our Facebook event page (https://fb.me/e/1Mtu7LIaX) to assure us that you have suffered appropriate and traditional levels of discomfort. All participants will receive a medal for their efforts and whilst we will NOT be providing prizes for the speediest runners, we will judge the photos received via Facebook and reward the muddiest and grubbiest accordingly.

• Run your own socially distanced 9.6 mile route
• Run any time between 1st and 31st January 2021 – go on you know you want to do it on New Years Day!
• Follow the instructions and the link emailed to you to in order to submit your elapsed time (not moving time) accompanied by a screenshot of your run from your running application of choice

• Entries are limited to 400 and will close when this limit is reached or at 13:00 on January 31st, whichever comes soonest
• Runs must be completed and evidence submitted before 23:59 on January 31st

This year’s event will be held in support of our two current club charities, to which we will be donating at least 50% of the proceeds. If you would like to make an additional donation, please pay their respective websites a visit: –
• ‘Made a Mark’ https://madeamarkcharity.com foundation which exists to ‘make memories for bereaved children’ (This is the main TRC Charity for 2021) and
• ‘CALM’ https://www.thecalmzone.net in memory of Thornbury Running Club member Liam Jones

3. TRC CoVid Running Code
As you will be running on your own or with small groups whilst we remain in Tier3 our CoVid Officer has developed a code to remind all TRC Members of best practise when out running.

EA guidelines currently allow running in groups of six (which was previously not allowed) but it should be assumed there is no general knowledge of this fact!

Guidelines:
1. Always run – and be seen to be running – with physical distance between runners and other members of the Group.
2. Try to avoid areas which we know will be busy with people walking. Where possible avoid single track passing places and if you find that you cannot pass with sufficient physical distance, stop and turn around, going back to a ‘safe passing place’
3. When running towards people approaching from the front
• If in a group revert to single file running (and stop talking):

4. If you are approaching people from behind:

5. If running in a Group and you stop for a break, don’t clog up the pavement to allow other users to get past.

Conclusion:
Although these guidelines are pretty obviously good practice they are sometimes easy to forget. But hopefully if followed the running club will avoid any negative press aimed at runners.

That’s all for this week and we will keep you advised mid January if anything changes. Let’s hope we go down to Tier 2 in January then we can restart running in Groups of 6 from the Leisure Centre Car Park again.

If you have any events to add to the Diary or if you have anything to add or any suggestions or announcements please send by e-mail to trc@rensh.idps.co.uk

ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2020

The final event of the curtailed and changed dates Road Race Championships took place at the Chippenham Shortest (Longest) Day 10K half muddy trail race on Sunday.  2 runners lucky enough to live in Tier 2 areas took part in the actual race while 2 others took the virtual option.  Results and standings can be found on the results page.

There will be no awards for the 2020 season but results for these races can be brought forward to count as part of the 2021 championship whenever that might resume.

TRC from Monday 21st December

South Gloucestershire remains in Tier3 and this will be reviewed and any changes will be announced in two weeks on Wednesday 30th December.

***************************************************************************

A few weeks ago, your Committee unanimously agreed that whilst we could legally recommence the Group runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays we should hold off whilst we are in Tier3. However we did make an exception for the Xmas lights run last night on 17th Dec which was enjoyed by quite a number of Groups (of up to 6) starting at different times and places around Thornbury and all running around the 6ish mile route to see the best of the lights. Eastland Road had the most lights on a single house, Chatsworth Park was the most stylish closely followed by some good displays on the new Badger Estate. Thanks primarily to Mike Bennewitz for organising the route.

The annual Wotton-Under Edge Christmas run on Sunday 20th December is now cancelled as W-U-E is in Tier2.

Note that there will be no arranged runs on Thursday 24th December or on Thursday 31st December. If we are in Tier2 after 30th December the next organised runs will be on Tuesday 5th Jan and Thursday 7th Jan.

Captain Kevin Wood is not intending to post any routes on Facebook over the Xmas and New Year period. However depending on requests and what Tier we are in in January he may start again if Members find it helpful.

1. Club Quiz Night (on Zoom) – Wednesday 16th December
For the 12 or so Teams that joined in the Quiz over Zoom on Wednesday Mark West did a great job as the Quizmaster. The ‘running related’ questions were pretty tough and the lead changed hands a number of times before Jo Emerson and Neil finally came through at the end to be the Quiz Champions.

2. England Athletics Run & Talk Programme – Champions needed
Emma Pritchard has a message for all Club Members….
A couple of weeks ago the committee approved my proposal to apply for the club to join EA’s #RunandTalk programme. #RunandTalk aims to improve mental health through running. Full aims can be found here: https://www.englandathletics.org/athletics-and-running/our-programmes/runandtalk/

As part of the programme the club needs Mental Health Champions. These individuals will promote Mental Health awareness within the club and sign post individuals to where they can find support. Champions should have lived experience of a mental health problem, either personally or from a close relative or friend.

I will be one of the Mental Health Champions, I have found running to be a great way manage my own struggles with depression. BUT I am looking for people to join me.

4. Events Diary TRC Diary 2020-21

Many of our Members are missing competing in races and the opportunities to enter real races are limited. However if you look hard enough there are still quite a lot of real races out there – attached this week is a list of 31 ‘local’ events over the next few months. We will aim to keep this list updated on a regular basis.

Most of these events are listed by one of the 3 organisations referenced at the foot of the list. The assumption is that if the event is listed on RunBritain or Time Outdoors or DBMax the event has been Licenced and will go ahead as per the dates given in a Covid secure environment.

If you wish to look further afield or into later next year then go to the organisation’s lists directly by copying & pasting the link given into your browser.

5. TRC CoVid Running Code
As you will be running on your own or with small groups whilst we remain in Tier3 our CoVid Officer has developing a code to remind all TRC Members of best practise when out running.

That’s all for this week and we will keep you advised before the end of December if anything changes. Let’s hope we go down to Tier 2 after 30th December then we can restart running in Groups of 6 from the Leisure Centre Car Park in January.

If you have any events to add to the Diary or if you have anything to add or any suggestions or announcements please send by e-mail to trc@rensh.idps.co.uk

Best Wishes for Xmas and the New Year to all our Members from all of us on the Committee.

AR 18/12/20

TRC from Monday 14th December

I’m sure you all know that South Gloucestershire is in Tier 3 and this will be reviewed and any changes announced next Wednesday 16th December. With the falling rates of infection, we are hopeful that South Glos will be moved down to Tier 2. However we can’t count on this and this note covers what we expect to happen for our “Christmas Lights Run” next Thursday 17th December and the “Annual Christmas Run” around Wotton Under Edge next Sunday 20th December.

A few weeks ago, your Committee unanimously agreed that whilst we could legally recommence the Group runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays we should hold off for two weeks whilst we are in Tier3 with high infection rates and look to recommence after 16th December when we would hopefully go down to Tier2 with lower infection rates. The advance arrangements for runs on Thurs 17th Dec & Sun 20th Dec are detailed below.

1. Christmas Lights Run – Thursday 17th December.
The Club Xmas Lights run is a tradition as old as the club and we wanted to maintain the tradition this year if we could. We have created a specific route crammed full of Thornbury’s best lights for you to see. (full route is a bit less than 10k). The best lights have been marked on the route map:

https://www.plotaroute.com/route/1367462?units=miles

There are 3 suggested start points on the route map, marked M. Start any time between say 6:30 – 7:30 pm and go in either direction – clockwise or anti-clockwise. That way groups will likely pass each other whilst out on their run. NB. there are various houses with charity collection boxes, so you may want to bring money!

Please use the WhatsApp groups to create a run buddy group of 6 and to agree a start point and start time.

To add to the fun, we are offering a prize to the group of 6 with the best Xmas based fancy dress. All 6 need to take part to be eligible with photo evidence on Facebook please.

• Be Safe: Please observe social distancing; This is an ‘outdoor Non COVID-Secure environment’ run so no track & trace is required
• Be Seen: Wear Hi-Viz and a head torch
• Be Festive: Antlers, Father Xmas hat, tinsel etc.

Note that there will be no arranged runs on Thursday 24th December or on Thursday 31st December. If we are in Tier 2 the next run will be Tuesday 5th Jan and Thursday 7th Jan.

2. Wotton-Under Edge Christmas run – Sunday 20th December.
If we remain in Tier 3 this run will be cancelled as we should not move across Tier boundaries and W-U-E is in Tier 2. If we move down to Tier 2 we can visit W-U-E and run from the usual meeting place – The Chippings Car Park GL12 7BD

Arrange yourselves in run buddy groups of 6 leaving the Car Park anytime between 08.00 for the ‘long’ course and 10.00 for the shorter routes. Unfortunately we are banned from meeting up after the run so please have your mince pies & coffee in your groups of 6 and then leave for home. Try and make sure you have someone in your group that knows their way around Wotton and the usual routes.
• Be Safe: Please observe social distancing; This is an ‘outdoor Non COVID-Secure environment’ run so no track & trace is required
• Be Festive: Antlers, Father Xmas hat, tinsel etc.

3. Club Quiz Night (on Zoom) – Wednesday 16th December 20.00 – 22.00
In the absence of the usual Xmas social events we will be holding a Club Quiz Night on Zoom. Mark West is arranging and it will be open to all Members. Caution: Hyde United & Newport County Questions may be included!

No preparation necessary, and although TRC completely prohibits the use of performance enhancing (inhibiting) substances in its regular running events, please feel free to have a glass of wine / beer / cake to hand as assists if you would like to join.

I would be grateful if people could confirm / hint at likely attendance, just so I have an advanced idea on numbers. Please e-mail markuswest@hotmail.co.uk thanks. There is no limit to capacity, other than the chaos that will follow when managing things through a zoom call!! We will progress through each of the 6 rounds with everybody listening in individually, but there will be a few occasions where we will boldly go where our zoom account has not yet gone! (with us breaking out into groups)

Although majority of questions are possible through just listening in, there will be some visuals as well so best to join via a computer / laptop etc. Please see zoom call details below for link to connect! I will circulate these again the night before just in case anyone needs a reminder, or loses details.

Our CoVid Officer is developing a code to remind all TRC Members of best practise when out running.

As the CoVID pandemic continues unabated there is increased nervousness from other footpath users vying for the same space as ourselves. This code is to hopefully help mitigate any possible negative reaction towards runners from other users of the limited Footpaths we share around Thornbury.

• Be the first to move, creating as much physical distance as you can (i.e. not just 2m)
• Move early & move in an exaggerated way
• Smile at people/wave as you pass (no need to talk) and thank them loudly if they have moved over too, or stopped.
• Acknowledge them with a wave of the hand
5. If running in a Group and you stop for a break, don’t clog up the pavement to allow other users to get past.

That’s all for this week and we will keep you advised later this week if anything changes. Let’s hope we go down to Tier 2 then we can restart running in Groups of 6 from the Leisure Centre Car Park in January. There should be another newsletter out before Xmas with more details.

If you have any events to add to the Diary or if you have anything to add or any suggestions or announcements please send by e-mail to trc@rensh.idps.co.uk

TRC from Wednesday 2nd December in Tier 3

Lockdown2 finished yesterday 1st December. South Gloucestershire is now in Tier 3 and this will be reviewed and any changes announced in two weeks on Wednesday 16th December. England Athletics have yet to update their guidance but the government website covers the situation in Tier3 with respect to ‘going for a run’.

Full details are here…
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/tier-3-very-high-alert?priority-taxon=774cee22-d896-44c1-a611-e3109cce8eae#sport-and-physical-activity

Sport and physical activity
In line with guidance from sporting national governing bodies, you can take part in organised sport and physical activity outdoors with any number of people. However, you should avoid contact in training and, for some sports, avoid contact in all activities. Read the guidance on what this means for your sport.
Gyms and sports facilities will be open for individual exercise and exercise in single households or support bubbles only. Indoor group activities and exercise classes should not take place.
You can continue to do unlimited exercise alone, or in an outdoor public place in groups up to 6.

***************************************************************************

We had a special Committee Meeting on Monday night to discuss what we should do as a Club regarding returning to meeting and going for a run from the car park on a Tuesday and Thursday. A brief message was put out on the Members Facebook page on Monday and a fuller version is below.
• It was agreed that within the rules of Tier 3 we could return to the previous arrangements from Thursday 3rd December and meet up in the car park with Covid secure conditions and go for a run in groups of up to 6 people.
• It was also recognised that South Glos had a very high infection rate (albeit now it is dropping) and we have a lot of members that fall into the vulnerable category mainly due to age.
• Our Captain had carried out a quick poll of the Group Leaders and he reported that if we return to meeting on Tuesdays & Thursdays we will struggle to have leaders for all Groups at the moment. We need more leaders willing to turn out on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
• We also discussed other issues affecting the return to running as an organised Club activity such as the wave of negative comments about runners surfacing on Social Media.

As a Committee those present unanimously agreed that whilst we could legally recommence the Group runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays we should hold off for two weeks whilst we are in Tier3 with high infection rates and look to recommence after 16th December when we would hopefully go down to Tier2 with lower infection rates (we will review on or around 16th Dec). In the meantime those that want to run can use the existing WhatsApp groups to make their own arrangements. Kevin will continue to post ‘Route of the Week’ and ‘Virtual Tuesday’ and we will look at some alternative Thursday sessions arranged on Zoom:

Thursday 3rd December – Pilates with Mel
Thursday 10th December – Body Con with Taryn

Assuming we do decide to recommence Club runs after 16th December we will target Thursday 17th December as the “Christmas Lights run” (in Groups of 6 of course)

1. Weekly Route and Virtual Tuesday efforts.
To continue to keep us running together whilst apart during the next few weeks Captain Kevin will post two events each week: Kevin posts The Virtual Tuesday efforts on the Members Facebook page on a Monday and the Route of the week also on the Members Facebook page published on a Saturday. These routes are only published on the TRC Members Facebook page. If you do not have access to Facebook and want to take part please e-mail captain@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk and Kevin will forward the information to you.

2. Events Diary TRC Diary 2020-21
Many of our Members are missing competing in races and the opportunities to enter real races are limited. However if you look hard enough there are still quite a lot of real races out there – attached this week is a list of 25 ‘local’ events over the next few months.

3. Club Quiz Night (on Zoom) – Wednesday 16th December 19.45 – 22.15

In the absence of the usual Xmas social events we will be holding a Club Quiz Night on Zoom. Mark West is arranging and it will be open to all Members. Caution: Hyde United & Newport County Questions may be included! Zoom details to follow. Please put the date in your Diary.

4. Virtual Riverbank Rollick – January 2021
Entries for the Virtual Rollick have now gone live on Race Nation with full details via the Facebook Page.
https://race-nation.co.uk/register/thornbury-running-club/virtual-rollick-2021
• Follow the instructions and the link emailed to you to in order to submit your elapsed time (not moving time)
accompanied by a screenshot of your run from your running application of choice
• Medals will be posted during February as we collate the results and assess the photos
• Places can be transferred using the Race Nation web portal
• Entries are limited to 400 and will close when this limit is reached or at 13:00 on January 31st, whichever
comes soonest
• Runs must be completed and evidence submitted before 23:59 on January 31st.

This year’s event will be held in support of our two current club charities, to which we will be donating at least 50% of the proceeds. If you would like to make an additional donation, please pay their respective websites a visit: –
• ‘Made a Mark’ https://madeamarkcharity.com foundation which exists to
make memories for bereaved children’ and
• ‘CALM’ https://www.thecalmzone.net in memory of Thornbury Running Club
member Liam Jones

That’s all for this week and we will keep you advised if anything changes.
If you have any events to add to the Diary or if you have anything to add or any suggestions or announcements please send by e-mail to trc@rensh.idps.co.uk

Events Diary : December to March

A number of you had trouble finding the link to the new Events Diary attached to the TRC weekly e-mail sent out last Sunday. The link was actually there and it worked but it was squashed up against my e-mail address so it didn’t look quite right.

I have just updated the Diary and added 4 events including the Green Man Ultra (45 miles) so I am sending out again to everyone – attached here…. TRC Diary 2020-21

We will aim to keep this list updated on a regular basis and send out any updates with the weekly e-mail to all.

Most of these events are listed by one of the 3 organisations referenced at the foot of the Diary.

If you know of any events that should be added or of any changes to the events listed then please send an e-mail to trc@rensh.idps.co.uk

TRC w/c Monday 23rd November during Lockdown2

The most recent Government directives for Lockdown2 mean we will not be able to meet on a Tuesday or Thursday for 4 weeks from 5th November until 2nd December as we must all ‘Stay at Home’

‘Stay at Home’ means you must not leave or be outside of your home except for specific purposes. This includes exercise outdoors with the people you live with, with your support bubble or, when on your own, with 1 person from another household.

Full details are here…
