2. Pete Mainstone Challenge – Club 10k Update

Thursday 27th May saw the 2021-22 Pete Mainstone Challenge get off and running with the Club 10k.
Thank you to Steve Dimond for the route (Thornbury ‘2 Peaks’); to Ashleigh, Jerry & Pete for capturing all the times and to Nick Langridge who is doing the results service. 30 people ran on a warm and still night, and a few more plan to run by the close date of 6th June (Please submitting your results, time & distance, to captain@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk). Once the event is closed we can publish all the results. Thank you to everyone who took, or is taking, part. At the time of writing the newsletter we had raised £145.93 in support of the Rotary Walkathon in aid of Jigsaw Thornbury. Thank you to the 18 people who have donated so far, please can we ask everyone else who participated to consider a donation please. We suggest each participant makes a minimum £5 payment voluntary contribution, to make this easy please use the Virgin Giving page: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/ThornburyRunningClub

3. Ultra Impressive – Race Report ~ Paul Harrod
Whenever a race profile contains three ‘aid stations’ with prominent red crosses, and an elevation map with more ups and downs then the FTSE 100, you know you are in for a tough race.
However this did not dampen the enthusiasm of Ashleigh Ferris to take on her first ever 50km run: the daunting sounding UltraX Spring Trail Series. Despite the ferocious wind and frequent downpours, she finished in a highly impressive 15th place in her age category, in a time of 6hrs and 14 mins, and just outside the first 100 finishers in the entire race. The joyful series of pictures posted on Strava suggest she still had plenty of energy to celebrate her magnificent achievement afterwards!
Ultra regulars Ros Rowland and Jo Emerson also both did the UltraX Spring Trail both coming top of their age categories.– Ros was 1st FV50 in the 50km event in 6.26.50 just 12 minutes behind Ashleigh and Jo was 1st Fv40 in the hilly Half Marathon in 2.31.29

Slightly closer to home, Laura Orna took on the Bristol Epic Three Peaks race, starting in Pensford, and stormed round the 16.5 mile course in 2 hours and 44 mins. She finished in an incredible third place overall ,and second senior female. It is tough enough walking up those three peaks, (Knowle Hill, Maes Knowle and Blackberry Hill), let alone running them, and the challenging weather conditions on Saturday make Laura’s achievement all the more significant.
Finally, Laura Newell ran the Westonbirt Arboretum 10k, in what must have been very tough underfoot conditions, in a time just outside 1 hour. A very good result for a tough trail run in these unusually wet conditions!

4. Cotswold Way Latest
Still spaces available for this club classic, 3 more runners, 3 reserves and 1 volunteer please. If you would like to apply to join a team, be a reserve or volunteer, please contact Judy Mills judy.mills@live.co.uk. The Club is paying the full entry fee for both EA & non-EA members, as this is a Club event. However you do have to be a fully paid member of TRC, otherwise this could invalidate our entry leading to disqualification.

5. Thornbury 10k
We have agreement from Thornbury Rugby Club to use their facilities for our 10k annual club event on Thursday 15th July. We are currently looking at the start logistics, and hence number of runners we can accommodate, before announcing more details. Mark your calendar, more details to follow.

We still need everyone please to continue to use our ‘track & trace’ app on a Tuesday T&T Tuesday & Thursday T&T Thursday please. Whilst we have moved to stage 3, EA makes it clear that to be a ‘formally organised activity’ we must be ‘COVID-secure’, and to be COVID-secure “All clubs and coaches and event providers must capture pre-activity health questionnaires, including participant contact details which can be shared upon request with the government’s Track and Trace initiative. This could be through existing club membership forms, the RunTogether platform, updates to booking forms or sign in processes which we would advise all members complete on a regular basis anyway.” Hence our T&T app. Thank you.

Through the summer months all groups will be going off road for all or part of the Thursday night runs. Please wear appropriate footwear e.g. trail shoes. If you have questions about the route, contact the leader.

Many of our runners have often commented on how much they value the mental health benefits of running. Following on from the recent Run and Talk, we are encouraging those running or walking to pay particular attention to the nature around them sometime during the week, especially at TRC club runs on Thursday 13th May.

4. We Are Growing – Emma & Chris Pritchard
Since we restarted the club a few week ago we already have 7 new members and 8 people trying the club out before deciding if they would like to join. If you know somebody who would like to come along and try the club out, please ask them to e-mail membership@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk before they attend. It really helps us if they get in contact first, so we can get the paperwork out of the way.

5. Race Reports – Wonderful Wilson Smashes Marathon PB – Paul Harrod

Lockdown has been easier on runners than for participants in other sports. The daily permitted exercise allowance had a novelty value in the spring of 2020. Yet a year on, many of us are itching to get back to the challenge and camaraderie of an actual race. There is only so much joy to derive from a Strava crown, or becoming the “Local Legend of the bin store to A38 traffic lights”.

Thankfully, even with social distancing restrictions in place, the likes of Rogue Runs and DB Max have organised time-trial races where runners go off in groups of six, and chip-timed results ensure that there is a full roster of finishers at the end.

Garry Slater ran the recent Severn Bridge 5 mile race, and as anyone who has ever run the parkrun there knows, you are pretty much guaranteed a headwind in one direction or another. Despite this, Garry stormed to an 11th place finish in a time of 32 mins and 29 secs. Not only that, he was second MV50.

On Sunday 25th April, a few intrepid TRC members set off for the banks of the Severn, for the Shepperdine half and full marathon races. The sun shone, there was not a cloud in the sky, and a rare east wind provided both a cooling breeze and a stiff headwind to contend with on large sections of the course.
The half-marathon race attracted some of the best club runners from across the region. Therefore, recent TRC recruit, Sean Leadbetter, should be very proud of his 44th place finish, in a shade over 1 hour and 20 minutes. To put that in perspective that is an average per-mile pace of about 6 mins and 9 seconds. A very impressive performance indeed.
146 runners also lined up for the full marathon. Thornbury’s Ashleigh Ferris ran a clear PB to cross the line in 3 hours, 50 minutes and 6 seconds. That placed her as the sixth senior woman. Ashleigh has recently been honing her speed at Phil Lucker and Nick William’s Tuesday night training sessions, so look out for her when she goes PB-hunting in the shorter races! Jonathan Hall was 41st senior man in a very creditable 4 hrs and 13 mins.

If a road marathon is a daunting prospect, how about 50 miles on the vertiginous trails of the South Down Way? On the 17th April, 400 of the UK’s leading ultra-runners competed in the arduous race from Worthing to Eastbourne, featuring 5700 feet of elevation along the way. It took over half of the field more than 10 hours to complete the race; some taking over twelve. However, TRC’s Nick Williams clinched a 10th place finish in a total time of 7 hours and 16 minutes. That is an average speed, over the entire, undulating, 50 miles, including fuel-station stops, of 8 mins, 44 secs per mile. An astonishing performance from Thornbury’s premier male runner.

However even Nick will agree that the stand-out performance of recent weeks has to go to new TRC member Lucie Wilson. Lucie was due to run in the Richmond marathon, but when it got postponed, decided to make it a timed run around the roads of Rockhampton and Hill. Lucie’s time is therefore not an official record, but, as Strava will attest, she finished the 26.2 miles in a time of 3 hours, 7mins and 50 seconds.
Had Lucie run that in 2019 (pre-pandemic, and with a full programme of marathon races) it would have easily put her inside the top 50 women across the whole of the UK, including professional athletes. Let’s hope Lucie will be spearheading TRC’s women’s team in the upcoming road and cross-country races, as they have the potential to achieve something special.

If you have run results you would like to see reported please contact Paul via reports@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk

6. You’ve Got Sole – Kevin Wood
I noticed an article in this week’s EA ‘Athletics and Running for everyone’ and thought I would bring it to your attention.
Over 300 million pairs of shoes and insoles end up in landfill every year. In the first initiative of its kind, Enertor® has started a scheme to recycle insoles. Your old insoles will be used for making anything from athletics tracks to playgrounds, recycled into recovery slippers or donated to Forgotten Feet, a charity providing foot care services to the homeless. Get involved today, reduce your carbon footprint, and help support our planet. Insole recycling.

7. London Virtual Marathon

The Brightwell, a charity based in Bradley Stoke that supports people living with neurological conditions, have 3 places available to take part in the London Virtual Marathon. Do you know anyone who may be interested? The fundraising target is £150/person. We would love to fill these places and if you could share this with members of the Thornbury Running Club that would be fab. If interested e-mail: Claire Wingate. claire.wingate@thebrightwell.org.uk

The first event in the 2021-22 Pete Mainstone Challenge is a Club 10k event on Thursday 27th May. It would be fantastic to see everyone running this event to kick of the challenge off in style. We will be supporting the Thornbury Rotary Club Walkathon, although we will be running! The club has a long history of supporting the Swimathon, which has been replaced by the Walkathon in 2021.

• Date: Thursday 27th May Club Night. If, however, cannot run on Thursday 27th May you can complete the same course anytime during the 2 week period 24 May – 6th June and submitting your results (time & distance) to captain@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk
• Start time: Staggered start time in pace groups to avoid overcrowding (just start in groups, not run in groups):
6:45 – Walking group
6:55 – “11 min + 5K” (running @ 12 min pace)
7:00 – 10 min pace group
7: 05 – 9 min pace group
7:10 – 8 min pace group
7:15 – 7 min pace group

• Timing: You will be responsible for self-timing and be asked for your time and distance run at the finish. Pete will be collecting your details at the finish.
• Route: Meet at the TLC top car park as usual, event starts from Coopers Road. Please meet in the car park, where there is more space, before moving to the top of Coopers Road for your start time. The route will be published next week. It will not be marshalled, so you are responsible for checking the course before the day.
• Cost: Like the Swimathon, the Walkathon is a charity event, and it is raising funds for JIGSAW Thornbury https://www.jigsawthornbury.org.uk/. We suggest each participant makes a minimum £5 payment voluntary contribution. We have set up a Virgin Money Giving page to make this easy: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/ThornburyRunningClub

2. Nutrition Questions – Kevin Wood
I have already received some great questions for the EA nutrition session. Just a reminder, we have been given an opportunity by EA to take part in pilot Zoom session with a nutritionist, along with only 1 or 2 other clubs. EA have asked me to submit some sample questions in order to plan the session content and gauge the level of interest amongst our club members. Please send your questions to captain@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk so I can get back to EA. Thanks.

3. Week #3 of Club Coaching Tuesday – Kevin Wood
Details of last Tuesday’s coached sessions for anyone unable to attend and who would like to recreate the sessions:
* Aztec – 4 x 1200m / R 400. Run at projected 5k pace
* TLC – 12 x 400m + 1 x 200m (i.e. 5k) / R 2 mins. Please keep a note of total run time for repeat of this session and benchmarking other runs.
Please join a coaching WhatsApp group by contacting for Aztec / Nick (Williams) 07745 133524 or TLC / Kevin (Wood) 0796 6634237.

4. 10 minute Group Week #1 – Kevin Wood
To meet everyone’s needs we have rearranged the groups and now have 7, 8 , 9, 10 and 5k/11 minute groups. Looking at Strava the 5k/11 min group is at a 12min pace and the 10 min group was quite spread. Do we need an 11 min group?

5. The Sunday Long Run is back – Steve Dimond
The first long Sunday run took place on Sunday 25th April. If you would like to join the run(s) start at the scout hut (car park) near Manorbrook School at 8:30 am. No-one will get left behind and there are usually ways of cutting back for a shorter run. COVID group numbers apply. To be kept up to date on plans and routes please join the ‘Sunday Long Run’ WhatsApp group by contacting Mike Bennewitz 07790 491304.

• Who’s leading this week?

1. Referring a Friend – Emma & Chris Pritchard
One of our biggest sources of new members is family and friends, which is great! If you know somebody who would like to come along and try the club out please ask them to e-mail membership@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk before they attend. It really helps us if they get in contact first, so we can get the paperwork out of the way.
We have had 12 people come along for the first time in the past 2 weeks which is brilliant and we hope to keep it up.

2. It’ Working! – Kevin Wood
Thank you all for continuing to use the track & trace system. Looking at the number of people in the photos and the number registered it looks good! There were a couple missing from Aztec on Tuesday please. Remember this is for your safety.

3. Good News – Kevin Wood
Last week we reported that there were 70 people who had yet to responded. Delighted to report that we are now down to 36 yet to respond. Also, good news that we have 7 new joiners to the club since we started back 3 weeks ago.
One person who has moved away, so is not renewing, said “I do want to say thank you though to the club for making me feel so welcome in my year of running with you. I have been to a lot of the clubs in Bristol and I think this was definitely the friendliest I’ve been to!”

4. Report of week #2 of Club Coaching Tuesday – Kevin Wood
Another great turnout both at TLC and Aztec for Coaching Tuesday. The efforts session details are published in the WhatsApp groups and on Facebook for those who want to do it virtually. So if you are not on Facebook or in a WhatsApp groups, please join a WhatsApp group by contacting for Aztec / Nick (Williams) 07745 133524 or TLC / Kevin (Wood) 0796 6634237.
Please come and join one of the sessions next week, and remember you can move between groups.

5. Nutrition Questions – Kevin Wood
When we did the recent Coaching Survey there was interest expressed in a session on nutrition. So I have spoken to a number of nutrition professionals and also England Athletic to see who can help us.
We have been given an opportunity by EA to take part in pilot sessions with a nutritionist, along with only 1 or 2 other clubs. This would probably be a Zoom session.
EA have asked me to submit some sample questions in order to plan the session content and gauge the level of interest amongst our club members. Please send your questions to captain@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk so I can get back to EA. Thanks.

6. New 10 minute Group! – Kevin Wood
We’ve been looking at the Group’s for the past weeks and noticed that, based on Strava data, the 11 min and 5k group are running at a similar pace and over a similar distance. We are also getting a number people interested in joining the club looking for 10:00 – 11:00 pace group, a group we don’t currently have. So there is a gap at the moment in our current pace groupings.

So we have decided from 22nd April to make the following changes to groups:
1. Combining the ‘5k + 11’ into one group, running typically at 12 min currently
2. Introducing a 10 minute group (i.e. 10:00 – 10:30 pace).
All other groups remain unchanged.

7. Sunday morning runs are back – Steve Dimond
The Sunday morning Run is back. After a long gap Sunday morning runs are back next Sunday 25th April. As usual starting at the Scout Hut (car park) near Manorbrook School at 8:30. This coming weekend Ros will be leading a 15+ mile off road, and Steve Dimond, a 6 mile run at a steady pace. As usual, no-one will get left behind, there are usually ways of cutting back shorter, and covid group numbers etc will still apply. To be kept up to date on plans and routes there is ‘Sunday Long Run’ WhatsApp group – you can get added to this Group by contacting Mike Bennewitz 07790 491304

8. Announcing ‘The Pete Mainstone Challenge’ 2021/22 – Kevin Wood.
To recognise Pete Mainstone’s tremendous contribution to the club we voted to rename the Club’s ‘Captain’s Challenge’ the ‘Pete Mainstone Challenge’. Pete, Nick Langridge and I have revised the rules to make it competitive, inclusive and to encourage participation.
Simply select and enter events from the list below. We may need to change the events if any get cancelled! Please bear with us. Scoring uses a points system based on number of races run and finish position, the rules and an example of how it works is shown below. Nick has kindly volunteered to keep score.
There will be an overall female and male winner based on highest points. There will also be 5 category winners, combined female and male, based on the TRC pace groups.

The six events are:
• 27th May (Club Night) Club 10k Challenge (More info on this event to follow next week)
• 13th June Forest of Dean 10k
• 23rd June Chippenham 10k
• 29th August Severn Bridge 10k
• 5th September Woodchester
• 3rd October Berkeley 10k

Rules
• The challenge has 6 events. Each event is worth 5 points for simply entering and running (DNS = 0 points, DNF = 5 points). Enter as many as you like. You could score 30 points just by entering and running all 6 events.
• Your top 3 places count towards your final position points score. (This is in addition to the entry points for all the other events you enter from the 6 listed.)
• To calculate your position your finish time for an event is age adjusted. We are using positions and points, not times, as the events are of different distances and terrain.
• Your finish position versus the other TRC entrants is then determined, split by gender.
• First place, for each gender, gets 25 points, second 24 down to 1 point for 25th. If there are more than 25 female or male TRC runners they score 0 position points.
• There will be an overall female and male winner based on highest points.
• There will also be 5, combined female and male, category winners based on the 5 TRC Thursday Club Night pace groups.
• Any questions to captain@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk
• Final decision on any ruling Pete & Nick
• Events listed may change

For example:
• Betty enters all 6 events, but only runs 5 of them due to an injury. Her entry points for the 5 events run, based on 5 points each event = 25points
• In the 5 events, after her times are age adjusted, Betty has the following finish positions versus other female TRC participants: 10th, 15th, 20th, 12th and 8th.
• Betty’s best 3 finish positions are 10th, 12th and 8th. Points for these finish positions are 16 + 14 + 18 = 48 points
• Adding Betty’s entry points of 25 to her position points of 48 gives Betty an overall score of 73 points.

9. Parkrun of the week 5th June – Kevin Wood
All parkruns resume 5th June. It would be great if as many members as possible could turn up at Thornbury parkrun on 5th in club shirts and let everyone know we are back! We have spoken to Thornbury parkrun are expecting us. If you cannot run, please can you marshal at Thornbury on 5th June, wearing your club shirt of course.
Let’s make parkrun a club event each week and every week we will nominate a ‘parkrun of the week’ where we can muster and wear the club vest. Location list for future parkruns to be published nearer the time. Get your club shirt out again, or even buy a new one!

10. Something to report?
Matt Johnson, who has been reporting club runs and results very effectively to the local press for several years, has retired from running due to a long term back problem. We have written to thank Matt for his great work and service to the club. I am pleased to announce that Paul Harrod will be taking over the role and reporting will begin when parkrun restarts (5th June). If you have run results you would like to see reported please contact Paul via reports@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk

5. The date question is “Date of the Session”, not Date of birth and is in the format DD/MM/YYYY not MM/DD/YYYY
6. Please do it on the day, not weeks in advance. It asks about “prior 14 days”
7. If you forget (and I have done it too) please do it when you get home after the session
8. As soon as we are allowed to we will stop using it!

The following are the five groups – 7 min, 8 min, 9 min, 10/11 min and Walking – the same as marked out in the top car park.
