The Thornbury 10k – Thursday 29th June 2023

On behalf of Race Director Ros Rowland thanks to the 50+ TRC Members who helped on Thursday night. We had a successful race with many of the runners saying they really liked the new course and congratulated us on the organisation. Particular thanks goes to all the course marshals for keeping the runners safe and the people on the water station for keeping everybody hydrated on what was a warm night Also thanks to the marshals around the finish who were juggling between runners finishing and cars coming in and out of the Anchor car parks.

We had sold out the 400 entries but we had 83 no-shows (21%) so there were 317 finishers.  The timing people who did a good job to have all the results ready for the presentation at 20.45 said that 20%-25% no-show is about the average this year.

Oliver Beale from Westbury was first home in 33.51 and TRC’s Ben Bohane came in 6th overall, 3rd Senior Man in 36.32. Thornbury’s very own Jessica Heffer was 1st lady home in 39.56.

Thanks goes to the Sailing Club who were very helpful and who even provided some car park marshals. Also thanks to Severn Ambulance who provided the medical cover but fortunately the race was incident free despite the appearance of the worlds largest tractor and trailer that decided to drive through the finish area twice!

It looks like we now have a proven course for running the 10k next year but as Ros is standing down we are looking for a new Race Director if it is to go ahead. Anybody fancy having a go at getting a small team together to organise next year’s 10k?

New Club Captains

As mentioned by Arthur on Thursday night last week, Mel Wilson and I (Nick Williams) have agreed to be your new Male and Female Club Captains of the club for the foreseeable future. Not only does this make for a more diverse role as Captain, but it also gives us half a chance at keeping up the good work that Kevin Wood did as our predecessor!

As part of our remit as Captains, as well as promoting participation in internal and external races and events (and dare I say it cross-country), we would like to place more of an emphasis on recognising the achievements of our membership, no matter how big or small those achievements may seem. It could be anything from winning or placing well in a race, either overall or in a given age category, through to the completion of your first parkrun, and anything in between. This could include milestones such as reaching a certain number of parkruns, recording a new PB or running your first race following a long injury lay off. To this end, we will be keeping an eye out for notable performances on Strava and on Parkrun, but it would also really help if you could send through anything that you feel is noteworthy so that we can share in your success to the e-mail address below.

In addition, we are firm believers that we are a club, run by members, for the members. It is with this in mind that I would encourage you all to please contact us if you feel that we could be improving any aspect of the club, or if you have any ideas that you would like to see implemented. Again, this could vary from changes to the way we do announcements on a Thursday evening (I will improve, I promise!) through to proposing an ‘away day’ somewhere, or even a social event. Any ideas will always be welcomed!

Hope to see you all soon,

Nick and Mel (captain@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk)

In 2020-21 11 walkers were killed by cows and 31 people sustained non-fatal injuries. Cows do appear to be getting more aggressive and a lengthy article in this week’s Sunday Times explains why cows attack and what to do if you find yourself in this situation. TRC Annual Party – Friday 19th May

Just over two weeks to go before our annual running club party.  We need to give final numbers to The Ship a week before so this is a final call for anyone who wants to come along and join us for some food and drink, presentation of awards, and a disco. The evening is being heavily subsidised by the club so it would be lovely to see as many people as possible there.

All you need to do is complete the form below and send the Club £16 per person
