If you have joined the club in the past 2 years please ask any long standing member if you want to know more about the evening. FAQ:s

Q: I want to go a bit further / faster than the main group. A: Yes, this is what normally happens and smaller groups do loops to re-join the main group. We need to arrive back about the same time to get showered.

  1. Sunday Long Runs

A reminder to all Members that we still have the Sunday morning run from the car park next to the Scout Hut on Park road at 08.30. This is usually about 10+ miles, fairly sedate and mainly off road along tracks and fields but with plenty of turn off points for those looking at a shorter distance.  If you are interested see Arthur Renshaw or reply to the What’s App Group “Sunday Long Runs”

  1. Dogs

Over the past few years we have, on just a few occasions, had members bring their dogs with them to club night. We were asked recently did we have a policy for dogs at club runs, and a couple of members & leaders spoke to us and said they did not like running with dogs and felt them to be a trip hazard. So at the Committee meeting on Monday this was debated and it was decided that dogs should not be brought to Club nights. This has been a rare occurrence but we wanted everyone to be aware of the guidance.

  1. Club Nights (Last updated 15/11/21)

race report w/e 31st July

On Olympic ‘Super Saturday’ almost no eyes were on the Mundy playing fields, but all the same, TRC managed to secure a 1-2-3 in the Thornbury parkrun.   (Don’t worry, this report won’t take nouns such as medal and podium and mangle them into verbs.)

Last week Nick Williams cheered on from the sidelines, but this week he laced up his trail shoes and showed us all how it is done.  Thornbury parkrun, with its hills and sharp descents, is ideal for Nick, combining, as he does, the poise and balance of Nureyev with the stride-length of Nijinsky.   Nick was over a minute ahead of the next runner, and recorded a hugely impressive sub-18 time.   Ben Bohane was second in 19 mins flat, with Paul Harrod in third, even if he wasn’t in the same post-code when Nick crossed the line.

Conditions were particularly muggy, which might explain a surprising lack of PBs.  However special mention to Julie Jolley for a debut run at the Mundy’s in 24:36, just a second behind 15 yr-old Laura Evans, (daughter of George), who was the first junior to finish.  Romeo Maddelena also ran a first Thornbury parkrun in 25:13, while the rapidly-improving Roger Glew ran 24:50 – just outside his PB, but now well over a 60% age-graded score which is the benchmark for a serious runner.
At Stonehouse, Nick Landridge ran 21:34, and yet again managed an 80% plus age-graded score.   As a reminder, parkrun UK state that any score above 80% puts the runner in ‘national class level’, meaning they would rank alongside the very best runners for their age and gender anywhere in the country.
Down in sunny Teighmouth Alan Gatling ran a wonderful 21:01, which gave him an age-graded score of over 70%.   Parkrun regards that as ‘regional class’ so an indication of just how good Alan’s run was.   Henry Orna was allowed an hour off daddy duty, and made the most of it, racing round Lydney in 20:41.  Mark West and Andrew Darton went all the way to Tamar Trails, and finished 16th and 17th respectively, while Thomas Darton was top junior in 8th place overall with a time of 20:40.
Given how many dedicated ultra-runners we have in the club, it takes a rare feat of endurance to raise the collective eyebrow.  However Steve Wiltshire, plus his father, decided to run 24 hours non-stop in the Conti Thunder Run, which is an almost unfathomable amount of time to be on your feet.   The organisers picked a closed loop to do the run, which added to the psychological and mental stress, but on the plus side made the parking easier.  Sadly an injury meant Steve couldn’t complete the full 24 hours, but he still kept going for 12 hours plus, which is something very few people will ever have the inclination to attempt.

TRC Bulletin for W/C Monday 19th July

Each week you should only get two e-mails from TRC:
• A weekly Bulletin with info we think you need to know and dates for events and activities.
• A Race Report e-mail with results if there are any. If you have results you would like included please e-mail Paul Harrod reports@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk

From today all Covid -19 Government restrictions have been removed so we can stop Track & Trace. However Thornbury Leisure Centre is maintaining many of the restrictions including QR code on check-in and mask wearing around the Centre is their preferred choice. Please respect their requirements.

1. parkrun – Saturday 24th July
Would be great to see everyone running, or supporting, the first parkrun back on Saturday 24th July at Thornbury. Appreciate that for some of you training for longer events, 5k is a little short. I am London training so plan to run to Thornbury, run the 5k and then do a further loop home to get my training distance. Club T shirts at the ready!
Thornbury parkrun are also looking for volunteers to help on the 24th July – see Malc Carr if you can help.
In future weeks I will nominate a parkrun of the month to try and get as many club members as possible to each location. A good social opportunity and a chance to promote the club.

2. Lockdown is lifting, we are back running, we can share lifts, and it’s time for a social! – Thursday 29th July
On Thursday 29th July ALL groups will be meeting at Olveston Sport and Social Club, Alveston Road (NOT Thornbury Leisure Centre) for a run leaving at 7pm as usual. Leaders will be aiming to get back for 8pm for much needed refreshment in the bar. There is a lot of parking on-site. Further details next week.

3. Pete Mainstone Challenge Events
29th August – Severn Bridge 10k
5th September – Woodchester

4. Tytherington 10k – Sunday 17th October to be confirmed
Further details to follow once the event has all the necessary approvals.

Pete Mainstone Challenge

The third event in the Pete Mainstone Challenge took place last night 23rd June at The Longest Day Chippenham 10K and 5 members took part. The results and standings can be found on the results page.

The 2nd event, Forest of Dean trail 10K, reputedly took place on 13th June but Tough Guy, the organisers, have not published any results on their website. If you did take part in this and have or know of any results please send your time directly to the scorer and it will be incorporated into the results. Thank you.

Cotswold Way Relay – Saturday 3rd July 2021

A message from Judy Mills to all TRC Members
judy.mills@live.co.uk

We have three Teams entered in this event, so now we need 30 runners (plus a couple of reserves).
We will be entering one Vets Team and probably two mixed Teams depending on the number of female runners who wish to take part.

Please look at the webpage https://cotswoldwayrelay.co.uk/ and check you are ok with the rules (this year you will need to download an App and self-time) Let me know by e-mail (address above) if you wish to take part and whether you have a preference for which Stage you run, or if there are any you are unable to run.

We will also need 3 volunteers who may be asked to deal with a road crossing or a water station.

The sooner we can sort out who is running what, the sooner you can sort out a recce of your Stage. They are much better marked than they used to be but somehow someone always manages to get it wrong!

Note the Club will be paying the Entry fees for TRC Members but if you are not an England Athletics Member there will be a surcharge applied by the organisers.

ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIPS

2 of the nominated Club Road Race Championship events have survived and the first one took place yesterday on its rearranged date at Westonbirt.  In the teeth of Storm Aidan and much like a cross country rather than a road race on its reworked course to keep inside the grounds, the results are now in and can be found on the results page.

There were only 4 runners showing in the results as Thornbury Running Club although more were entered so if your result is missing or was added later let me know
