🎗 Charity of the Year 2026/7

2 Charities have been nominated.  The nominations and submissions are as follows:-

Brain Tumour Support

Proposed by Carol Mosses on behalf of Izzy Downes, daughter of club member Andy Downes, who has been receiving treatment for a brain tumour. Izzy’s submission is as follows

In 2020, our dad, Andy Downes was diagnosed with a grade 4 Glioblastoma Brain Tumour. During the pandemic he underwent emergency brain surgery followed by intensive chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy. Before this he ran a successful building company aswell as serving the community being a firefighter. Unfortunately this all came to an end as his life has changed forever, stopping him from driving and being independent and struggling with everyday activities. Brain Tumour support Charity has helped our family so much offering therapy, advice and always being there when we have needed them allowing us to connect with other families who are in similar situations. Any donations are hugely appreciated by the charity and will go towards helping other families facing similar situations to ours. Andy regularly attends this charities support group, allowing him to tell others his positive recovery story (and showing his amazing Strava runs).

Our dad is unfortunately not in the clear, although we are so so fortunate his tumour is now stable and regularly scanned/ checked every 3 months, grade 4 tumours are aggressive and stubborn so we know this is not the end of the story for our family. Following recovery from the surgery etc he found a new love of running as previously being very active the new limiting factors he suffers from including loss of peripheral vision and loss of hearing he struggles with other daily activities. Running has given him an outlet, particularly Thornbury Running Club as it allows him to socialise and build relationship with others with similar interests.

Krunch South West

Proposed by Liz Ball. Her submission is as follows

Krunch South West is a small local youth work charity that has been working in the local area for 13 years, supporting young people through a wide range of engaging and impactful services. With a team of 16 youth workers and young volunteers, they provide a range of services and activities for local young people, such as youth clubs, holiday activities and trips, one-to-one mentoring, school-based support, and valuable volunteering opportunities, helping young people build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
In the past year alone, Krunch South West has worked with over 500 local young people and delivered more than 550 sessions, highlighting both their reach and the meaningful difference they make in the community.
Their base, known as The Pod, is located at Thornbury Skate Park – right next to where our running club meets – and is also open to the wider community a few days a week, offering hot drinks, snacks, and lunches in a welcoming space.
Support from our running club would directly help Krunch South West continue and expand this vital work – funding more youth sessions, keeping trips and activities accessible, maintaining safe spaces like The Pod, and supporting the dedicated youth workers and volunteers who make it all possible.
As one parent shared, Krunch has given their son “a space where he can truly be himself,” helping him build confidence and self-belief through activities like gym sessions and creative projects. They’ve seen him become calmer at home and kinder to others, adding that the support from Krunch “has made all the difference” to their family.

The chosen charity will be decided by member vote at the AGM.

Entries for the May race will open after the April race on 9/4/26, so keep an eye out for further details. We’ll let you know when you can enter. As tradition now dictates… we’ll also be bringing along some well-earned post-race snacks and drinks so we can refuel and rehydrate on the prom.
