Cotswold Way Relay Report (Sat 6th July 2024)

Generally, when it comes to the Cotswold Way Relay you think of beautiful sun-drenched sandstone paths and how you are going to keep cool and stay suitably hydrated on each of the stages that vary in distance from around 9 miles up to 12 miles, and with most involving a minimum of 1,000ft of ascent.

This year however, didn’t follow the party line, and with Ben Foss and Ollie Brown setting off with the larks at 7am the advice quickly followed to keep your jackets on as it was really cold, and pretty slick under foot. The rain didn’t relent throughout the morning with Charlotte Havard-Smith having to put up with a cold, wet and miserable (her own words) Jo Plumbley on Stage 2, and then Nathan Darkin and Ali Vaz setting off in the mist on Stage 3. The sun did however, finally make an appearance on Stage 4 where Laura Orna and Sarah Newnes navigated the re-routed leg around the Air Balloon roundabout, however the rain was never far away and continued to keep runners in check with James Marshall and Paul Thomas on Stage 5, where Paul accomplished his “King of the Cotswolds” accolade for having run all 10 stages over the years.

Nick Williams and Chris Foley started in the rain by running past Liam Gallagher’s new million pound ‘bolthole’ on Selsey Common, before Kev Cundy and Sarah Blakey encouraged the sun to stay out for a little longer on Stage 7, where Thornbury RC’s newest cheerleader was out in support. Hannah Hamilton and Mel Wilson tussled their way through Stage 8 in what seemed to be glorious sunshine finishing within only a matter of minutes of each other, before the baton was handed over to George Evans and Danny Bonnet who equally kept a close eye on each other on Stage 9, finishing even closer together with only 37 seconds separating them at the finish. This left Phil Blackburn and Adrian Wombwell to carry each of the teams home on Stage 10 to a grandstand finish at Bath Abbey, swiftly followed by a pint of the amber nectar to cheer on England.

Some notable performances to mention include the three stage records that fell on Stages 4, 5 and 10 run by Laura Orna, Nick Williams and Phil Blackburn respectively, and also to all of those members who participated for the first time.

Huge thanks go to Nathan Darkin and Lizzie Williams for getting, and keeping, everybody organised over the last few months with various drop outs along the way, and also we couldn’t get through a report on the Cotswold Way Relay without mentioning Judy Mills who couldn’t stay away and kept the photographs coming in, and our runners going, on Stages 4, 7 and 8 (and probably many more…!).

Finally, a special mention also goes out to Jim Williams (and family!) for taking up the club’s marshalling place, and ensuring that all of those running Stage 10 managed to safely cross the A46 north of Bath en route to the finish.

Provisional times for each leg are shown above (new stage records for Legs 4,6 & 10  highlighted):

  1. Thornbury 10k – Thursday 27th June

On behalf of Race Director Colette Jackson thanks to all the 60+ Members who Marshalled and helped in various capacities last Thursday. Feedback from the runners has been very positive and we kept up with the hight standard of race organisation that we are known for. We had a few problems with large agricultural vehicles insisting on going past the finish when runners were coming in but otherwise all went well. Special thanks to the Sailing Club who organised the car parking and laid on cake at the finish.

If you have any remaining Marshal bibs or any other bits of race equipment please return to Arthur Renshaw when you can. Thanks

Club Championship 10k 13th June – Report by Captain Nick W

It was a cold, wet and windy summer(!) evening last Thursday for the annual TRC club championships over the course of the Thornbury 10k. There were some notable absentees, most likely due to the dire forecast that many had predicted earlier in the day, however 29 intrepid runners turned up to brave the elements and prepare for battle against their fellow club members, and themselves, for bragging rights for the next 12 months. Despite the earlier rain, the weather held out for the duration of the event with some great times posted, even with the hills apparently feeling more ‘hillier’ than normal. In the ladies field, Jo Plumbley came home in first position, whereas in the men’s field, Ben Bohane topped the podium to claim the accolade of club champion for 2024. Congratulations to everyone who took part, and thank you to Thornbury Sailing Club for providing the post race warmth and comfort of their clubhouse, together with liquid refreshments and cake. Special thanks go to all of the volunteers who gave up their own opportunity to take part to ensure that everybody got round the course without getting lost, and to prevent too many overzealous drivers on Foss Lane from becoming too hazardous. Photos and times can be found on the TRC Facebook page.

Reminders:.

TRC WEEKLY BULLETIN – W/C 10th JUNE 2024

Thursday Club Night Leaders

13th June : No leaders this week – we’re all down to the Sailing Club  for the 10K event.  Details  below:-

This year, as we have for the last couple of years, we will be holding the Club Championship on 13th June (two weeks before the Thornbury 10k) from the Sailing Club in Oldbury-on-Severn, which will take the place of the usual Thursday night club run that week. The Sailing club will be open from 6:30, race start at 7:30.  After the race drinks and food will be provided at the Sailing Club so stick around for that. However, in the meantime, we could do with a few volunteers (who are not planning on running) to help out with logistics on the evening i.e., timing, marshalling etc. We only need a handful of volunteers, but without you, the event will not be able to take place. Could those of you who would be able to help out please let Nick know over the next couple of weeks so that he can sort out roles etc. in the run up to the event.

In the categories Nick Langridge, 46:43, was 1st MV70 and Avon County Champion, Chris Foley, 53:38, was 2nd MV70 and Jerry Clothier, 57:52, was Avon MV75 County Champion.
