———————————————————————————————————-

  1. Oldbury 10 Mile Race 21st September

The Oldbury 10 will be coming up sooner than you realise and we will be looking for marshals for the event, more difficult to fill with the extra distance to be covered.  If you can do the same job as you did last year that would be very useful.  You can sign up using the Google form which would be much appreciated.  You can select Yes, No, Uncertain, or I’m not sure what’s involved:-
https://forms.gle/8c1XYUbgSqGRJEDh9

2. Great Western Air Ambulance (GWAA) – proposed visit by TRC Members

GWAC were very grateful for the £2,050 we presented to them on the evening of our AGM.

As a way to show our gratitude to the club, we would like to invite anyone interested to an invite-only base tour. This tour offers a unique chance to discover the lifesaving work we provide. Attendees expect a tour of the airbase, learn about a typical day for our Critical Care Team, and potentially meet the crew and view the helicopter and critical care car up close. These events shed light on the charity’s operations, covering everything from lifesaving missions to the advanced equipment and interventions we provide.

They have a maximum attendee limit of 30. If this event fills up and others wish to attend, we have additional dates throughout the year that I can add them to.  Please complete the Google Form available for you to register your interest in a visit on a date to be determined. https://forms.gle/ygBkmYE9eWGvDDt98

This was the 3rd of the club’s Pete Mainstone Challenge series races.  A hardy group of runners turned out and enjoyed a challenging, scenic run around Woodchester Park.  In fact, Jo and Catherine enjoyed it so much that they, quite separately, took extra long scenic detours to take in more of the scenery.  Then we all had a picnic to finish off.

  1. Too Hot to Trot?  Thornbury 10k  Thursday 19th June

Race 2 in the Club series turned out to be a rather warmer experience than the wintery Rollick – with temperatures forecast to be over 25°C into the evening, we took a few additional precautions to keep runners and volunteers safe in the heat. It was a cracking evening all round.  On the night, 273 runners lined up from the nearly 400 entrants – a strong turnout considering the conditions.  Nick Williams took up the role of race starter and announcer for the first time – a man you can trust with a megaphone. Only one tractor sighting this year, but we did seem to be inundated with an apparent invasion of flying insects congregating outside the Anchor after the race (something found the heat and runner’s sweat an attractive combination).  We did have a horse and rider sauntering towards the finish line just as the first runner was due down the hill…this was not supposed to be the Man v Horse race!

As to the running. A standout performance from Jamie Williamson (Bristol & West / Kinsi Running) saw a new men’s course record of 31:53. Brilliant runs too from TRCs own Phil Blackburn (2nd male, 35:13) and Ali Vaz (3rd female, 42:48). A huge thank you to all our TRC volunteers – especially the first-timers! We need over 55 people to get the event running smoothly and safely.  You did a fantastic job – the runners were full of appreciation for all the support out on the course. The evening wrapped up at the Sailing Club, with its new balcony with beautiful views of the estuary being a fine setting for the prize giving. That’s it for another successful year!  Roll on the Oldbury 10-Miler in September – the final race in the series!

2. Nick Williams’ Cotswold Way Challenge 100km – First place!

Congratulations to Nick Williams for coming first in the Cotswold Way 100k Ultra in 11:23:18 on the hottest day of the year. He was over an hour in front of the second place!

It is not too late to support Nick raising the profile and raising funds for Myeloma UK (https://www.myeloma.org.uk/), If you are able to support Nick in raising funds this is the link:- https://www.justgiving.com/page/nick-williams-1

 With a message from Nick:

‘I wanted to say a huge thank you for all of the very generous donations that have been made by club members in supporting my challenge in raising funds for Myeloma UK in memory of my Dad. Both my family and I have been overwhelmed by the level of support we have received, and the generosity that has been shown.

It was an emotional day, but I had the family there with me along the route for support (including my brother-in-law Chris by my side for the last 25km of it), and the memory of Dad there with me for every single step of the journey. I just wish that he could have been there with us at the finish!

Hope to see you all soon, once the legs have recovered….’

Thornbury 10K Road Race – Thursday 19th June 2025 – YOUR CLUB NEEEDS YOU!

We are still short of at least 20 volunteers to be able to run the Thornbury 10K road race safely.  This really is a “many hands make light work” and  “a great opportunity to give back!!”.  I can’t promise it will be sunny.  But I do know that it’s a great chance to cheer other runners on, to get to know other runners at the club, and to support the club in putting on these great events.  If you haven’t marshalled before and are worried that you “won’t know what to do”, just add that into the notes section.  We have lots of experienced marshals who can show you the ropes.

Please sign up via this Google form!!  Thank you, Colette.

We have a WhatsApp group for those who attend the Tuesday sessions and a message is sent each Tuesday morning confirming the location and time of the session for that week. Types of session include:

2. Pete Mainstone Challenge – Next Event Hogweed Trot 2nd June

It’s coming soon  – Monday evening.  Another club night out and next event for the Pete Mainstone challenge is the Hogweed Trot on Monday 2nd June 2025 @ 7.00 PM in Yate.

A great local run with beers and cheers provided at the finish by TRC

Course Map here:-

https://hogweedtrotters.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Hogweed-Trot-course-map.pdf

You can enter here:-

https://www.fullonsport.com/event/hogweed-trot-10k-2025/profile

The club will also subsidise members entries by £10 provided that they finish the race and Thornbury appears against their name in the results. There is always somewhere on an entry page to indicate your club so just look around for it.  If you have already entered as unattached you will need to contact the organisers and ask them to put your club in.

Everyone has entered, over 40, so ‘enjoy’ the race.

3. Nick Williams’ Cotswold Way Challenge 100km

Some of you may be aware that my Dad was recently diagnosed (in December 2024) with Multiple Myeloma, which is a cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow.

Sadly, he passed away last Monday (7th April) after the cancer became more and more aggressive.

Before he passed away, I had vowed to run the above event to raise funds for the charity that is seeking to raise awareness of this awful condition, and also to research the disease and medical advancements that may be able to help sufferers enter into remission, or even to find a cure. I will now be running the event on 21st June in memory of my Dad.

The charity is Myeloma UK (https://www.myeloma.org.uk/), and I would invite you to take a brief look into their website, which will provide an insight into the disease and that if you are able to, to support me in raising funds, however great or small, to support the charity via this link:- https://www.justgiving.com/page/nick-williams-1

I appreciate that I often run events of this nature, however this is double the distance that I would ordinarily choose to run, and it will obviously be a very emotional day.

Many thanks, Nick

 5. Upcoming local races – don’t forget to enter as Thornbury Running Club

Kevin Arnold’s Park Run Tourist year:-

Well, I’ve now completed 1 year of parkrun tourism.

52 weeks, 28 parkruns (28 venues) including 19 venues new to me.

I had lists of parkrun tours to do over the last year – I’ve completed some lists, new lists have started and old lists have been augmented !.

I’ve completed some more of the challenges from the ‘parkrunner’ & ‘5k’ & ‘Running Achievements’ Apps, that take data from the official parkrun results pages. These include – Namely, (UK) Alphabet, Stayin’ Alive, 250th run and 3/4 Cowell (75 locations) being completed.

I’ve only got 2 PB’s but that’s the effect of 19 1st timer briefs !.

Also x4 volunteers at Thornbury and 6 weeks off with my fractured fibula (in 2 places !!).

I’ve probably added 50% to the annual mileage on the car and put on 2 stone with the post parkrun breakfasts !!

I’m still going to be carrying on touring (‘cos I’ve now more parkruns on lists than before I started trying to knock parkruns off my existing lists).

Here is the list of parkrun tours completed over the last 12 months –

Five Arches
Thornbury
Jersey Farm
Upton Court
Dudley
Y Promenad (Breconia)
Severn Bridge
Victoria Dock
Chippenham
Three Brooks
Wotton
Llanishen Park
Berkeley Green
(Little Stoke – “you can take my parkrun, but you cannot take my FREEDOM” ! [parkrun])
Hereford
Quakers Walk
Grangemoor
Rogiet
Blaise Castle
Eastville
Tremorfa
Marlborough Common
Cirencester
Simmons Park
Pont Y Bala
Severn Valley Country
Worcester Pitchcroft
Bryn Bach
Seven Fields

And I had a nice way to finished off, by getting to see a boomerang in Swindon last week ! (See ’10 Boomerangs South Beach parkrun’ on Facebook !)

If you’ve any Q, please ask.

Kit Donation For Charity at AGM

At the AGM there will be a kit donation for charity.  We recently donated surplus TRC kit to support a charity in Kenya.  Since then we’ve been in contact with Dursley running club who said they keep a stockpile of old unwanted/unused running kit donated from members which they periodically donate to charity. In the past they have supported causes in Africa and Ukraine and currently trying to support a charity in Gaza. We’d like to contribute to their collection so at the AGM this week Pete Cable will be collecting any old/unwanted kit anyone can donate to pass onto Dursley Running Club.  So bring it along.

 Thornbury 10K Road Race – Thursday 19th June 2025

The second of the events in the Club race series will be happening near mid-summer’s longest day again.  As ever, we are looking for volunteers to help run the event.  If you can please sign up via this Google form, that would be much appreciated.  A separate email will be sent as well.

  1. Club Captain

As you will have seen in previous bulletins, Nick and Mel have now stepped down from their roles as Club Captains. As such, we now have nobody to host our weekly Thursday club runs, which represents a poor reflection of the club to new and existing members alike.
We are still looking for one or two of you to step into their shoes, and take on the Captain role to keep the club ticking over. No experience is necessary, and the role isn’t particularly onerous and largely entails introducing Thursday night runs and sharing notices, organising the leader’s rota, organising the club championships (which Nick is willing to help with) and generally celebrating the individual and team success at TRC. If you are interested, please do let Nick know and he will gladly talk you through the role.

 2. TRC Charity Donation (revised details)

Nominations have been received and the process has now been closed again to further nominations.

 3. 2024/5 AGM and New committee for 2025/6 – Club Constitution and Club Rules

The Committee has fixed the date of the AGM for the Financial Year 2024/5 – this will be on Thursday 22nd May and will be at Thornbury CC and we will hold the AGM after a Run & Rehydrate. Drinks and Pizza for those who stay on for the AGM.

The Committee does not envisage any change to the Club Constitution or Club Rules for 2025/6. The Committee also confirmed that there will be no change to the annual subs for 2025/6 and the subsidy for joining England Athletics will remain in place.

If any Member has any issues to raise for the AGM please contact the Secretary Nigel Hale secretary@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk

 4. Tuesday Coaching

Please let people in your groups know that Tuesday coaching is for ALL members, inclusive and not scary! Let Carol Mosses know if they need to be added to the Tuesday WhatsApp if you are not able to add them.

We have a WhatsApp group for those who attend the Tuesday sessions and a message is sent each Tuesday morning confirming the location and time of the session for that week. Types of session include:

  •      12 * 400m repetitions

We are looking for one or two of you to step into their shoes, and take on the Captain role to keep the club ticking over.

After a successful staging of our 3 events over the last year – all sold out – the Committee has decided to confirm our donation to this year’s chosen Charity Great Western Air Ambulance.  We will now donate £2,000 and this will be done later this year.

Due to a total lack of any nominations whatsoever nominations have now been reopened until the AGM on 22nd May.  Contact Nigel Hale with any nominations that you want to put forward.

3.  New Runners course – Wednesdays 23rd April to 11th June

This is now in operation for 8 weeks until Wednesday 11th June at 6:45pm. We meet at the top of the Thornbury Leisure Centre car park. We aim to run together at a parkrun on Saturday 14th June to celebrate your success. The whole course costs only £10.

If you know anybody who may be interested in attending please contact beginners@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk and complete Introductory Running Course Interest (click on the link on the Thornbury Running Club website.)

4. 2024/5 AGM and New committee for 2025/6 – Club Constitution and Club Rules

The Committee has fixed the date of the AGM for the Financial Year 2024/5 – this will be on Thursday 22nd May and will be at Thornbury CC and we will hold the AGM after a Run & Rehydrate. Drinks and Pizza for those who stay on for the AGM.

The Committee does not envisage any chance to the Club Constitution or Club Rules for 2025/6. The Committee also confirmed that there will be no change to the annual subs for 2025/6 and the subsidy for joining England Athletics will remain in place.

 5. Riverbank Rollick 2026 – Race Director

The 2026 Riverbank Rollick will be on Sunday 18th January 2026.  We finally have a new Race Director – Jim Godden. Thanks for volunteering Jim. We are now looking for 2 or 3 people to form a small team to help Jim. No experience is necessary although computer skills would be useful.

 Results

A hugely successful away day at Weston Prom.  Thanks to:-
Matt Johnstone for setting it all off and helping inspire so many to turn out (34)
Jo Plumbley for providing us with all the drinks
Nathan for all the admin, information and refunds
Anyone else who contributed.

One plea from the event.  At least 13 members chose to enter a club designated event as unattached rather than Thornbury Running Club.  This makes it extra difficult and time consuming to compile all the club results.  It involves comparing lists with lists to work out the exceptions and then 13 extra searches on individual names to find the appropriate results instead of one search on Thornbury RC.  Please, enter as Thornbury Running Club.  It makes it so much easier to find you.  Besides which you are missing the discounts for affiliated club members.  Thank you.

For the club results follow the link to the Pete Mainstone Challenge results page on the web site to find not only all the results data but initial scores for the series outright and age graded.
