06/09 Marathon des Chateaux du Medoc

Moray Sloan  3603rd   6:25:00

Moray’s Run Report:

Many of you will know that I completed the above marathon near Bordeaux in the finely judged time of 6 hours 25 minutes (cut off is 6:30). This was position 3603/7847 – I don’t think they enforce the cut off very strictly. This amazing marathon takes in 64 local chateaux, 18 of which provide you with some red wine – so not a route for a PB! There is also plenty of food along the way including croissant, ice lollies, steak and oysters. Live music can often be heard along the way with many runners stopping for a quick dance or sing-along. Almost everyone is in fancy dress, some pushing crazy contraptions – this year’s theme was ‘the sea’ so I went as a pirate. The event is totally joyous with a very international feel and party atmosphere from the pre-race aerial acrobatic display to the post race free beer, music and fireworks. I can see why this race is on the bucket list for so many runners – if you ever get the chance to do it I highly recommend it.    Moray

11/09 Club Road Race Championships and Pete Mainstone Challenge Event

30 intrepid club members braved the wet and windy weather last Thursday and completed the event.    Well done to Nick Williams and Hannah Hamilton for winning the Road Race Championships and there are new leaders in both men and women’s categories in the Pete Mainstone Challenge with Ben Bohane and Hannah Hamilton.

Full results can be found on the Pete Mainstone Challenge Results page of the club website.

Park Run News 13/09:-

Peter Cable was second at Thornbury in 19:49.

This week’s novelty venue was Paul Saville at Mole Valley (for anyone who remembers Richard Briers in Ever Decreasing Circles and Mole Valley Valves) in Dorking (22:46).  Mike Bennewitz was in Weymouth (28:08).  Moray Sloan fresh from the above drinking marathon was at the equally exotic Widnes (21:53).  But the winner this week for travelling to a Park Run was Kevin Arnold who went all the way to the quaintly named Sheep River near Calgary, Canada (24:28).

Meanwhile, parkrun of the month is back.  Our next parkrun of the month will be at Chipping Sodbury on the 27th September. We are also asking members to nominate the date and location for future park runs of the month. The date can coincide with a special event e.g. birthday or milestone e.g. 100th parkrun. The location should be no more than a 30 minute drive from Thornbury.

Please message Nathan with your suggestions.

To make sure your results are included contact Mel Lloyd at results@thornburyrunningclub.co.uk. All results are on the members results page on the club website.  All club Park Run results are also on the Park Run Results page on the club website.

3. Great Western Air Ambulance (GWAA) – proposed visit by TRC Members

For the 15 or so TRC Members who expressed an interest in a visit. GWAA would like to offer them an invite-only base tour. This tour offers a unique chance to discover the lifesaving work provided.

Attendees expect a tour of the airbase, learn about a typical day for their Critical Care Team, and potentially meet the crew and view the helicopter and critical care car up close. These events shed light on the charity’s operations, covering everything from lifesaving missions to the advanced equipment and interventions we provide.

GWAA have one more date on offer – 15th  October at 2PM

Please register yourself for one of the dates. It is up to you if you want to make a donation but as a Club we donated £2,050 recently.

5. Kevin Arnold’s ‘Military Versus Cancer’ Charity Event

I’m taking part in a charity event next month – this is the ‘Military Versus Cancer’ – John O’Groats to Lands’ End gun pull. This is a 9-week event – which started today in Scotland at 0615 and aims to reach Pitlochry on Friday. My week is between Hereford & Bridgewater.

https://www.militaryvscancer.com/field-gun-pull-september-2025/

“ Commencing 1st September, I will be part of an extraordinary challenge—pulling a Boer War Field Gun over 1,000 miles from John O’Groats to Land’s End in support of Military vs Cancer.

We are doing this to raise funds for serving personnel, veterans, and their families affected by cancer. It’s a cause that means so much to all of us, and every mile we pull is a step toward providing vital support when it is needed most. It’s going to be tough. It’s going to be emotional. But with your help, it will be worth every step.”

Please sponsor me if you can – every donation counts, big or small.

I would like to raise £100 for each day I’m taking part and if I can start now, that is not a huge task. Please remember, what we do is supporting serving personnel, veterans, and their families affected by cancer, so every pound raised really helps.

Thank you, Kevin
