For the third year in a row, Thornbury RC travelled to Devon en masse for the ‘Bicton Blister’ and the shorter ‘Bicton Blister Light’. The chief attraction of this hugely popular day trip is the post-race pub lunch.
Sunday’s Bicton Blister is a 10-mile off-road race on an undulating course through the pebbled heathlands of Bicton and Woodbury common and the shorter ‘Light’ is a 4.5-mile race. Dylan Roberts and his sister Taryn were the first 2 Thornbury runners to finish in 25th and 66th place, respectively, out of almost 400 runners in 1 hour 12:45 mins and 1 hour 21:01 mins. Taryn also made the top 10 in the women’s field in 7th place. Alan Gatling was the next TRC runner to cross the line in 78th place in 1 hour 23:40 mins, followed by Ian Evans 82nd 1 hour 24:05 mins, Paul Thomas 89th 1 hour 25:03 mins, Natalie Bennett 90th 1 hour 25:24 mins, Hannah Kinlock Haken one place behind in 1 hour 25:33 mins, Joanne Plumbley 101st 1 hour 26:23 mins, Emma Barnes 154th 1 hour 32:58 mins, Rebecca Gatling 162nd 1 hour 34:28 mins, Chris Foley 186th 1 hour 38:42 mins, Mike Bennewitz 248th 1 hour 45:52 mins, Judy Mills 251st 1 hour 46:23 mins, Hugh McPherson 252nd 1 hour 46:24 mins, Jerry Clothier 260th 1 hour 48:26 mins, Nigel Hale 333rd 2 hours 2:41 mins, Karen Carr 350th 2 hour 8:38 mins, John Grimsey 379th 2 hours 17:21 mins and Arthur Renshaw 381st 2 hours 19:39 mins. The ladies team led from the front with a 3rd place in the senior and vets competition.
David Palmer led the TRC team in the Bicton Blister Light with a 34th place out of 149 runners in 49:52 mins, followed by Richard Illingworth 86th 59:47 mins, Club Captain and Trip Organiser Peter Mainstone 128th 1 hour 9:07 mins, Sylvia Fox 137th 1 hour 15:36 mins, Valerie James 138th 1 hour 15:50 mins and Sue Pascoe 139th 1 hour 16:06 mins.
There was a motor racing theme to this weekend’s races. Paul Saville lined up on the grid for Sunday’s Silverstone Half Marathon, which was run on the iconic Grand Prix circuit and finished 249th in 1 hour 36:18 mins. Closer to home on the Castle Coombe circuit, Paul Harrod and Jon Welsh revved their legs for The Chilly 10k. Paul has been posting some personal best parkrun times recently and managed another good performance in 25th place in 38:54 mins. Jon ran his fastest 10k time in a while with 50:14 mins run in 276th place.
This month’s Weston Prom featured a typically frenetic pace along the promenade and TRC were represented by Janet Gaze who posted a good result in this 5-mile race in 243rd place in 48:25 mins.
Paul Thomas was in Brighton earlier in the month and ran in the hugely popular Brighton 10k. Paul finished in 266th place out of over 1,500 runners in 42:17 mins.
Elsewehere, Thornbury’s parkrun results included Mark West with 22:04 mins run in Tamar Trails and Mel Lloyd in Wotton in 31:43 mins. In Chipping Sodbury, Garry Slater ran 20:15 mins, followed by Paul Saville 20:40 mins, Kevin Wood 23:34 mins, Roger Glew 24:53 mins, Duncan Pauly 26:42 mins and Lynne Turner 31:27 mins. On Severn Bridge, Adam Frontczak ran 19:56 mins, Kevin Arnold 21:18 mins and Richard Jackson 21:35 mins.
The previous week’s parkrun results included Garry Slater in Chipping Sodbury with a 20:08 mins run, followed by Laura Orna 23:05 mins, Kevin Wood 23:51 mins, David Palmer 27:30 mins and Richard Illingworth 31:15 mins. Brian Godsman ran 26:02 mins in Skatas, Paul Saville finished Tremorfa in 20:33 mins and Mel Lloyd ran 30:30 mins on the Rogiet course. Paul Harrod ran the fastest TRC time on any parkrun course for several months with an 18:28 mins effort on Severn Bridge, followed by Kevin Arnold 21:49 mins and Chris Lee 27:04 mins.
