Thornbury Running Club’s triathletes were on tour again, this time on the sun-baked island of Majorca for the middle-distance Challenge Peguera-Mallorca. A team of 7 included 4 Thornbury individual triathletes tackling the whole race and a team of 3 sharing duties in the relay race. The Mediterranean is generally known as a calm expanse of water, but it served up a surprise on race day with powerful waves, followed by a hilly and technical 90k bike course and a half marathon on the Pegeura boulevard to the finish line.
Richard Phillips knew what to expect from the conditions after racing in Spain on several occasions and he was the club’s first finisher in 565th place in 6 hours 8:27 mins. Kevin Cundy was the next to finish in his first triathlon abroad in 758th in 7 hours 12:09 mins, followed by Paul Newnes 774th in 7 hours 24:25 mins and Joanne Plumbley 7 hours 41:19 mins. The relay team of Madeliene Curtis on the swim, Ian Evans on the bike and Sarah Newnes on the run was 16th out of the 35 relay teams in 6 hours 3:41 mins.
Nick Langridge was the first Thornbury finisher in Sunday’s Stroud Half Marathon in 227th place and a very respectable 5th in the 60-69 age category in 1 hour 34:39 mins. Paul Thomas was the next TRC runner in 276th place in 1 hour 36:42 mins, followed by Hannah Kinloch Haken in 56th place in the women’s field and 368th overall in 1 hour 39:31 mins. The next TRC finishers were Kevin Arnold in 470th in 1 hour 42:13 mins, Chris Foley 791st in 1 hour 53:07 mins and Mike Bennewitz in 831st in 1 hour 54:42 mins.
John Grimsey was the lone Thornbury runner in last October’s Weston Prom Run and performing his usual pace making duties, he finished the 5-mile course in 278th place in 57:38 mins.
Meanwhile, Thornbury’s parkrun results included a swift 18:48 mins run from Paul Harrod in Cornwall on Penrose course. In Chipping Sodbury, Martyn Green ran 20 mins exactly, Garry Slater 20:27 mins and Richard Illingworth finished in 32:26 mins. Mel Lloyd ran 31:49 mins on water-logged Wotton course and James Marshall finished Whinlatter Forest in the heart of the Lake District in 28:56 mins.
