Judy Mills took part in the inaugural Wotton Lions 10k race on Sunday. Starting from the Renishaws Factory in New Mills, Wotton Under Edge, this new race was contested over a mixture of roads, tracks and fields on a flat course. Judy is a local resident and was the sole TRC runner in the field of 254 runners, finishing in the top half of the field in 97th place in 1 hour 2:03 mins.
The Weston Prom 5-mile race is a local running institution, starting in September and every month thereafter until May. The first race of the year was on 19th September and John Grimsey, now a Weston resident but still proudly running in the TRC runners, is a notable fixture in the field. John’s opening effort for this season was a 292nd place in 56:49 mins. Mitch Ford was the first and only other Thornbury runner on the day and finished in 62nd place in a decent time of 32:53 mins.
There were 5 Thornbury triathletes in a field of over 2,000 at the Weymouth 70.3 Triathlon on Sunday. Heavy rain and wind led to the opening 1.9k open water sea swim being cut in half, but there was still a 56-mile bike ride and half marathon 13.1-mile run to complete in challenging conditions. The field was packed with some of the top age-group athletes in the country, as well as some professionals vying for prize money. Dylan Roberts has been steadily improving over the longer triathlon disciplines and has performed especially well at the half ironman distance this season. He finished an excellent 131st place in 4 hours 44:44 mins (18:07 mins swim, 2 hours 43 mins bike and a 1 hour 35 mins run). Taryn Roberts was racing in her last triathlon before she travels across to Hawaii for the Ironman World Championships next month and the step up in competition will have served as excellent preparation. She finished in a fantastic 15th place in the women’s field of 370 competitors and 156th overall in 4:48:20 mins (17:22 swim, 2 hours 45 mins bike and 1 hour 37 mins run).
Will Hamilton was the quickest of the TRC swimmers and emerged from the sea in 16:44 mins, before completing the race in 352nd place in 5 hours 12:06 mins (2 hours 57 mins bike and 1 hour 47 mins run). Hannah Kinloch Haken was competing in her first half ironman event and finished in 61st place in the women’s field and 568th overall in 5 hours 23:01 mins (17:44 mins swim, 3 hours 10 mins bike and a swift 1 hour 44 mins run). Likewise, this was Sean Underwood’s first half ironman and he finished in 1,492nd place in 6 hours 59:03 mins (26:03 mins swim, 3 hours 47 bike and 2 hours 30 mins run).
At Thornbury parkrun, Adam Frontczak narrowly missed breaking the 20-min barrier for the first time but still recorded a personal best in 20:03 mins. Laura Orna was the next TRC runner in 22:13 mins, followed by Martin Smith 25:24 mins, Malcolm Carr 26:54 mins, Ann Green personal best of 29:27 mins, John Mann 33:19 mins, Jodie Haines 35:44 mins and Rachel Murphy 41:57 mins.
Elsewhere, other TRC parkrun results included Garry Slater 20:51 mins and Leighton Prescott 34:56 mins in Chipping Sodbury. At Crissy Fields in San Francisco, Katherine Adams ran 29:17 mins. Brian Godsman ran 25:01 mins at Skatas. On the Severn Bridge, Duncan Pauly finished in 26:15 mins and Lynne Turner ran 33:01 mins.
